We arrived on a Friday in early August (Deluxe double £443 for two nights). Although we thought the room was initially ok, the aircon was very noisy so we thought we would manage with opening the window, only to discover every window was sealed, bedroom and bathroom. How can this be a Deluxe room? Person on reception seemed to know this when I went to complain and to request a change of room. She said some of the air con units were like that as the units were under the bed (?). She also said the hotel was full but then found us a replacement room, also Deluxe, which was fantastic - much larger, lighter and facing to the back with the wonderful view so we were really pleased about that but surprised that these can apparently be the same same category of room?|A 4* hotel should do better than a sachet of dried coffee in the room and cheap cups (not mugs) with no saucers? Whoever cleans the room should check supplies of tea and coffee - one tea bag left and one decaf tea each day. Why not a coffee machine of some kind although I appreciate pods etc are not eco-friendly but perhaps just some other better alternative?|The man behind the bar had the worst attitude I've encountered in a while . We were waiting for some family to arrive to join us for tea. I asked what was available and was told it was just scones (we didn't want the full set tea). It was about 4.25pm and my family were due at 4.30pm but I was told I had to order then as the kitchen closed at 4.30pm - there was no negotiating - so I ordered without being able to ask people if they even wanted scones. When the scones were brought out to us on the terrace - which is a gorgeous setting, they were warm with a pot of jam and some clotted cream and very nice but I couldn't understand why the kitchen needs to be open to produce this? Basically, it's warming a scone and putting some jam and cream in a pot. The same man was on the bar in the evening and (without going into detail) his whole demeanour was just "off" and actually quite rude. Management should address that.|Breakfast - I've seen other reviews which mirror our experience. One coffee machine for the entire hotel - why not two? There was a long queue not helped by the coffee machine not working as it needed emptying. Several staff were milling around but hadn't bothered to check it. A really good range of items for breakfast but many weren't labelled. There was milk in a jug but is this full/semi or skimmed? There were no pots for honey or jam, so I had to ask. The staff at breakfast should be on top of all of this.|This could so easily be a 5* review if some of the above could be addressed. I really think the first room we had should be downgraded if the air con issue can't be revolved and there's no option to open a window - or at least put a rider on the room information. Many thanks to the person on reception though for changing our room - it made a huge difference to our enjoyment of...
Read moreI had a very impressive stay at this hotel. I didn’t have the pleasure of a room in the main building, instead being in an outbuilding, newly built in the rear of the estate. However this was far from being a disappointment and I’d happily book there again. The room was large and spacious, modern and very clean. The decor was very cosy and all the facilities you’d need are provided - ironing board, safe, hot drink facilities and lots of storage. While the LED light bulbs weren’t the brightest there was a number of lights throughout the room to compensate, and the chandelier in the main bedroom area gave a high end feel. The TV was a good size and the heating in the room was effective along with having windows which opened. Annoyingly there were no electric sockets at either side of the bed, so devices needed to be changed at the large desk area, beneath a TV which was a good size for the room. Overall the sleep quality was great, with the bed being large and very comfortable and no noise from the corridor or outside.
The bathroom was very spacious and a really pleasant area. There was a good number of high quality towels, the Molton Brown toiletries a great touch and everywhere was spotlessly clean. The sink and shower over the bath were traditional in design but worked well and the expanse of storage space was really welcome.
The bar in the main building is a lovely space, with a wide variety of spirits but unfortunately less of a range of beers. The staff were super friendly and efficient at the service, with all the drinks presented and served professionally, plus there’s loads of seating available for groups, couples and singles, with a lot of space in the area behind the bar.
The restaurant was surprisingly busy but understandably so. The menu has a good range of items and it’s a really nice setting with a relaxing atmosphere. All the dishes were presented well and portion sizes not too bad for the prices. The tuna tartar starter was tasty, although the promise of foie gras was rather disappointing in reality. The pork cheek main was very tasty and the chocolate desert rounded things off perfectly. The staff were all lovely and the place made for a very nice evening experience.
Overall it was a wonderful stay here and I can’t wait to return. With a comfortable room, great bar and restaurant, and beautiful gardens it lives up to it’s aim of being a venue more than just a hotel. There’s clearly a lot of history here too and with the decor that adds to the brilliant environment and experience - I can’t...
Read moreAbsolutely appalling experience. We arrived last Friday evening, the temperature in the area was -6. Having booked an an easy access room, we were given the keys to a room which was through various doors and ice cold corridors, we then had to go up some stairs then down an indoor slope which was even colder. Inside the room it was again ridiculously cold to the point where I had a thermal t shirt, a long sleeved cardigan, a down gilet and a stadium coat, plus gloves, snood and wooly hat and was, still shivering. We immediately called reception who sent someone to move us to a room which was only marginally warmer. We complained and they asked us to go to the bar and keep warm while they put fan heaters in the room, this did improve things but then we couldn't use the bath and shower after travelling most of the day as there was.no heating whatsoever. Throughout the whole hotel there were plenty. of original cast iron panel rads which pump out heat far better than modern ones. Not one radiator was on!. We then had a meal in an extremely cold restaurant, consisting of a very cheap cut of steak which got cold very quickly, was full of gristle and very chewy. We couldn't wait to get out. We went to the lounge where there was a log fire, which was ineffective due to the room size. The other guests we had spoken to in the restaurant came in and stood shivering by the fire. We had to go to bed to get warm. We were given various excuses re the issue, including someone had turned the heating off by mistake, the new boiler installed in December was playing up, and they had installed a whole new system which had teething problems. My opinion is they didn't watch put the heating on. There is a skeleton staff, who seem to multi task. They all did their best but were quite obviously not trained. It's my opinion the signs point to the business struggling. We had to stay in our room all day Saturday to keep warm and we we were eventually able to shower that afternoon about 15 hours after arrival. On the positive side breakfast was fine but got cold quickly, and it's an amazing building. Avoid...
