Read moreWow, I could write an entire essay on how amazing this trip was! Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge is a one of a kind place. From the most considerate staff, to enjoyable and action packed adventures, comfortable beds and beautiful, breathtaking views, a stay at KFGL needs to be on your list when in Seward. The boat ride is only a few hours, and the captains we had, were not only nice, but so informative, too. They would stop the boat to see wildlife, illustrating how much they cared to make our experience even better. During our stay at KFGL, we were met with delicious, warm, freshly cooked meals throughout the day. It was so nice to come inside from kayaking and be met with a bowl of soup or a cup of hot chocolate. All of our guides were over the top, providing knowledge on their experiences and being able to answer just about every question any of us had. Their expertise was intriguing and inspired me to come back home to California and continue my research about the fjords and wildlife within the area. Special shoutout to our guides Grace (who took me paddle boarding), Reece, Grace (who’s parents came to visit), Mooney, and other staff members, Gabe, Vi, and other managers and cooking staff! Also, if you stay here, definitely check out their sauna. It’s in the forest and provides an additional level of refreshment at the end of the day. The nature walk is so worth it! Not only do you get to try unique local Alaskan berries, but you learn so much about old grow versus new growth, birds, the bears in the area, ghost trees, and more! Anyways, the Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge is a magical, transformative place. I fully miss my time there, and I am looking forward to...
Read moreKFGL is the thing I was most looking forward to on our Alaska adventure, and it did not disappoint. Every single staff member was amazing, knowledgeable, friendly, and truly enjoyed working there. We had great views of the lagoon from our cabin, but we were rarely in it. We stayed three nights, which was perfect for us as able-bodied people who like to be active.
We had beautiful weather for most of the time, and they provide gear to help with the rain and mud. Be prepared for Rainforest weather, and have a good attitude about it. Plan on using the drying room; it's amazing (I brought washing sheets to wash my own clothes and dry them in the drying room, fantastic and so helpful for packing lighter on a long trip). The food was delicious and filling.
We had a great time hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. The ridge hike is awesome if you are able and it is offered while you are there. The all day kayaking was amazing, especially when a humpback whale appeared in the bay with us. We also had the good fortune of seeing humpback whales bubble net feeding on the boat ride to the lodge. The sea otters and harbor seals are plentiful and adorable. The salmon and black bears were fun to see every day.
As amateur birders, we had a great time identifying new species (download Merlin pack ahead of time since you won't have internet, but they have reference books in the lodge. We were also lucky enough to have ornithologist Moony as one of our guides to help with identifying birds. Thanks to all the guides for humoring all our questions.
We had an amazing experience and cannot recommend it...
