Generally enjoyed our stay in the "Papa Bear" cabin in Moose Pass, Alaska. The cabin is rustic and clean. A small stream babbles beside the cabin, which you can hear clearly from the front porch. There is Wi-fi but no cable TV. There is a single TV that can be used to watch DVD's available at the office. Continental breakfast served by Greek owner. Never tried the breakfast but heard it was good.
The "Papa Bear" Cabin is the largest cabin with a queen and twin bed downstairs and 2 twin beds in the loft. The loft is not a separate room and is open to the 1st floor. The loft has a severely slanted roof which made it uncomfortable for a 6 footer in our party. There is a single lamp and portable heater upstairs. Downstairs contains a radiant heater. Lots of beds with one small bathroom. Big Hot Water heater so plenty of hot water. No fan in the bathroom so kind of steamy. Shower head is quite low. If you are over 5'4", you are ducking to get your head wet. There were also small spiders in the shower. This cabin is the closest to the road so you do hear road noise.
I'm from Alaska so have been to many log cabin accommodations and this one is okay. Not great. Not horrible. Reasonably priced. All wood interior, small dorm refrigerator and microwave. In some places you can see outdoors between the logs. So, on a cool day, it is pretty cold in the cabin. We stayed in June 2019. It was rainy and cool and we did have to use the portable heaters. It was difficult to heat up the entire cabin so all were comfortable.
So, if you like rustic or just want to sleep a lot of people for a good price, this might be for you. If you get cold easily, are tall and prone to bumping your head and hate spiders - maybe...
Read moreWe stayed in the Papa Bear cabin for two nights. It was clean and comfortable. There were only two of us, but it was nice to have the extra beds and room to stretch out. There could be more outlets (they were lacking). The kitchen was adequate and the bathroom looked smaller and not as updated as the Coho, but it worked. The TV works, but only for DVDs. We did have WiFi. This particular cabin is very close to the road, and the big trucks make a lot of noise, especially if it is raining, but we use a white noise app, so we didn't get woken up from the noise. I would suggest ear plugs or some type of white noise to drown out the sounds. All in all, we liked our stay very much and it was in a good location to drive the first night from Whittier, and the second evening from Seward. It was a good price, but I booked the day before just in case we had problems with our trip and couldn't make it. It would be risky to book far in advance with their no refund policy. Luckily it worked for us because it was later in the season. Summer might be harder to get a cabin. Oh, and notice the stairs...nine to be exact. That might not work...
Read moreChris and Janet are kind and very helpful hosts. The “continental breakfast” turned out to be pancakes and coffee that were great. Cooking in the cabin is by microwave only but Chris invited us to cook in their kitchen if we wanted. There were no plates or utensils in the cabin but Janet gave us all we needed after we asked. Refrigerator is small but adequate for 2-4 nights if you bring your groceries with you. (The small market in Moose Pass was closed and doesn’t carry a whole lot when it’s open.) Log cabins are a little “rustic,” but they are sound and very comfy. Beds are very good. The cabins are a couple of hundred feet up a dirt road from the Seward Highway, so you hear occasional traffic when you’re outside but not when you’re in the cabin. There are trees and other vegetation all around, which is very nice but they block any scenic view. All in all, this was a very pleasant stay and we would...
