This is an overdue review. My husband, dog & I moved to Alaska in April 2017, & since we were traveling with a dog we planned ahead with reservations at dog-friendly motels each night. We had reservations at a motel that said on their website that they allow dogs; my husband called 5 days before our stay to double-check that & they again said yes, they allow dogs. Well, it turned out they had stopped allowing dogs 27 days earlier, no exceptions! (And the clerk was rude about it, to boot.) I was exhausted & was afraid we wouldn't find another motel that would allow dogs until the Palmer area, or maybe even Anchorage. But I got on Google & found the Nelchina Lodge; when I called to ask if they allow dogs, the woman who answered said, "We love dogs!" We were so happy the other motel, which had bad reviews but we thought was our only option for that area, turned us away, because we loved the Nelchina Lodge! We stayed in the motel part, not the cabins, because we wanted an en suite bathroom. (Note: the bathroom did not have shampoo & soap, but I always travel with those things, so it was not a problem.) The owner was very nice & we enjoyed chatting with him. He asked if our dog liked other dogs & when I said yes, he let his dog out to play with her. There is a diner only about 15 minutes away with delicious food, large portions, and reasonable (for Alaska) prices. This place is NOT fancy; if you want fancy, what are you doing in this part of the world in the first place? I gave it 5 stars because it's a great place to stay while you're on an...

I got the sense that he understood where he is in this place and time and wants to share the potential magic that exists there in that area. Traveling 70mph on AK1, one may not get a chance to realize how wonderful this area is. Nelchina Lodge is a perfect place to stop and stay awhile.||The accommodations are a fair price, and I concur with the aforementioned reviews – peaceful, enjoyable, immaculate, simple, professionally ran, and like the others we’ll...
