We were just passing through on AK1 when we saw this interesting lodge off the highway. We stopped to ask questions about recommendations – specifically, fishing for grayling. ‘Nelchina Pete’ - although very busy- stopped, welcomed and chatted with us with genuine niceness. Personally, this was reminiscent of old-time Hawaii and the Aloha spirit. Pete was also very knowledgeable and professional. I got the sense that he understood where he is in this place and time and wants to share the potential magic that exists there in that area. Traveling 70mph on AK1, one may not get a chance to realize how wonderful this area is. Nelchina Lodge is a perfect place to stop and stay awhile. The accommodations are a fair price, and I concur with the aforementioned reviews – peaceful, enjoyable, immaculate, simple, professionally ran, and like the others we’ll definitely come back!

We had a great experience at Nelchina Lodge. Pete and his wife Heidi are super friendly and kind and wanted us to have a great experience (we did). And their dog Big Lee is the sweetest black pup who will walk up to you and lean up against you. It’s so endearing. All in all, this place is a no frills motel on the middle of your trip to or from Eastern Alaska (in our case, McCarthy to go glacier hiking), but it’s perfect for what it is and just right to get a nights rest before making that trek. I talked with Pete for several minutes before leaving; he was very helpful giving us recommendations on things to see and I admire his passion for Alaska and life in general. Will stay again on any further trips.

This is an overdue review. My husband, dog & I moved to Alaska in April 2017, & since we were traveling with a dog we planned ahead with reservations at dog-friendly motels each night. We had reservations at a motel that said on their website that they allow dogs; my husband called 5 days before our stay to double-check that & they again said yes, they allow dogs. Well, it turned out they had stopped allowing dogs 27 days earlier, no exceptions! (And the clerk was rude about it, to boot.) I was exhausted & was afraid we wouldn't find another motel that would allow dogs until the Palmer area, or maybe even Anchorage. But I got on Google & found the Nelchina Lodge; when I called to ask if they allow dogs, the woman who answered said, "We love dogs!" We were so happy the other motel, which had bad reviews but we thought was our only option for that area, turned us away, because we loved the Nelchina Lodge! My dog & I had a relaxing walk with beautiful scenery behind the lodge, & the room was clean, comfortable, & stocked with a coffeemaker, coffee, a microwave & popcorn. We stayed in the motel part, not the cabins, because we wanted an en suite bathroom. (Note: the bathroom did not have shampoo & soap, but I always travel with those things, so it was not a problem.) The owner was very nice & we enjoyed chatting with him. He asked if our dog liked other dogs & when I said yes, he let his dog out to play with her. There is a diner only about 15 minutes away with delicious food, large portions, and reasonable (for Alaska) prices. This place is NOT fancy; if you want fancy, what are you doing in this part of the world in the first place? I gave it 5 stars because it's a great place to stay while you're on an...
