This review is only for the food, the lodge itself is nice and some of the accommodations are pleasant but we were there last night to eat and enjoy the view but we would have had better food if we’d opened a can of spaghetti O’s. Over the years I’d heard such great things about food and lodge I was looking forward to a good meal with a great atmosphere. The atmosphere didn’t disappoint but the food. Oh my the food. The chicken was so dry and tasteless that a cardboard box would have been equivalent - no, it probably would have been better. The accompanying - what I can only describe as gruel, was an unseasoned mush of barley that desperately needed either butter or olive oil and some salt and pepper at the least. It did have a few lovely carrot chunks knocking about amongst the barley paste and they were the highlight of the meal. The server was very nice and the folks that sat with us very pleasant company but I paid 50 dollars (including tip) for really bad food and that wasn’t pleasant. I’m not a picky eater and generally appreciate most food (even simple fare) but this meal was inedible. I would have gladly given it more stars just for the view and atmosphere but the food was so bad that it spoiled the view! I know that the supply issues are really affecting so much of Alaska even more than the lower 48 but heck, there are tons of lovely spring greens that could be foraged and the chicken could have been cooked so that it wasn’t dry and seasoned so it wasn’t tasteless. I’ve lived here long enough to be able to make do, even while entertaining, with what is available. Very sad experience. I’d give it another go someday just for the atmosphere and the views but I think I’ll...
Read moreThis lodge is a relaxing retreat that is nestled at the foot of the Black rapids Glacier. It is in the middle of the Eastern Alaskan Mountain range with some of the most breathtaking views of the range and glacier! The friendly staff share a love for the Alaska living and outdoor adventures. They were accommodating and helpfull throughout our stay. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Lodge has multiple indoor and outdoor areas for guest to relax and enjoy their time if staying in for the day. This location has endless outdoor adventures within a short drive or walk of the lodge. (Hike, snowshoe, cross country-ski, fish, snowmobile, atv, etc.) We stayed for a few days while we snowmachined on the south side of the range at the end of November. The sauna is a great way to decompress and recover from the days activities. Each meal was unique, delicious, and provided great nutrition before and after your daily adventures. Parking was available for a few trailers depending on how many other guests were there. Highly recommend for those seeking to relax in the mountains or for those looking to enjoy the many outdoor activities in the area....
Read moreThe lodge is a magnificent building, rooms warm and inviting and spectacular views from the front especially! You can do as little or as much as you desire- we were there for some R&R and stuck to the trails from the lodge as well as enjoyed an evening in the wood fired cedar hot tub! Meals are available on site and we highly recommend taking advantage-Marvelous! So much history (take the time to puruse some of the many articles and photos the owners have around the lodge), and check out the Roadhouse which the owners are in the process of lovingly restoring. Personally, for me, it was Annie and the staff who made our stay memorable. Unfortunately, we did not get to meet her husband Michael. She is the heart and soul of this place, never appearing ruffled and went well beyond the “norm”, at least in my experience. Our stay was one of the highlights of our 2 month long “Alaska” experience and that is saying a lot! My soul is forever touched by her kindness and warm heart. Don’t forget to ask her to play...
