I traveled to the Keweenaw Castle last week for a wedding, and it felt like stepping into a storybook the moment the road curved and the treetops gave way to that vast sweep of Lake Superior. The Upper Peninsula is already a special kind of quiet, but the castle amplifies it—stone, timber, and sky stitched together with long views and fresh air. It’s the kind of place where your shoulders drop without you realizing it.
I first stayed here back in 2019, right after the current owners purchased the property. Even then it had charm to spare; now, after years of love and careful renovation, it’s become genuinely luxurious. You can feel the upgrades in the details: solid, well-chosen finishes; thoughtful lighting that glows at night; bedding that makes mornings dangerously cozy; and a level of cleanliness and care that tells you the team treats the castle like a home, not a venue. Everywhere you look, there’s a “someone thought about this” moment—little comforts that add up to a big feeling of being cared for.
The wedding itself was gorgeous. The setup was seamless: ceremony framed by trees and lake, and dinner where every table had a view. As the sun went down, the sky turned that liquid copper the Keweenaw is famous for, and then we kicked off a silent disco under the stars. Swapping channels, dancing with friends, and suddenly realizing how quiet and crisp the night is when you slip the headphones off—that memory is going to live rent-free in my head for a long time.
The staff is a big part of why everything feels so effortless. They’re warm without being overbearing, the kind of people who remember your name and somehow appear right when you need something. And yes—the dogs! Friendly, well-behaved, and exactly the kind of welcome committee the castle should have. The hosts themselves are present and kind, clearly proud of what they’ve created and deeply invested in each guest’s experience.
One of the best parts of staying here is how much there is to do—or not do. If you’re an activity person, there are plenty of adventures available to fill a long weekend. If you’d rather unplug, the grounds invite slow mornings with coffee and late nights with blankets and a sky full of stars. On that note: if you’re a stargazer like me, I recommend the Turret Room for the most magical night-sky views. On lucky nights, the northern lights make an appearance as curtains of green and violet ripple across a Superior sky.
I’ve stayed in lovely places, but the Keweenaw Castle is in a different league. Lake Superior is the only Great Lake with the name to match the feeling you get here—expansive, alive, and somehow grounding all at once. I would recommend this place to anyone: couples planning a destination wedding, friends looking for a romantic or restorative getaway, or travelers who simply want a quiet, beautiful trip to the U.P. You probably won’t find another spot this polished and this soulful, with such a range of experiences in one place.
In short: the Keweenaw Castle is the best place in the world for that rare blend of wonder and comfort. It was special in 2019, and it’s extraordinary now. If you get the chance to go—go. And bring your dancing shoes and...
Read moreThis Resort has stunning views of Lake Superior. The rooms themselves are gorgeous. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
The only knocks against the location are these:
The last mile of the drive to the resort/B&B, are on a dirt road with gravel. It's in fairly decent condition and wouldn't be a problem for somebody coming in with a normal sedan or pickup truck. If you've got something nice and low to the ground, like a Corvette or other Sports car, you're going to be worried about getting stuck, if there should be any rain. Or driving too quickly and damaging the wheel wells with gravel that gets tossed up. I've got a very low to the ground convertible, and had to creep along at about 8 mph to minimize any risk for damaging the car. Were I to come back in my Ram 1500, I wouldn't give this a thought.
While this is a bed and breakfast, and breakfast items are included, they're in the form of a Serve Yourself format in a communal kitchen. Therefore, if you are planning on dining out for your meals, the shortest drive you'll have is 8 Miles. There is a phenomenal restaurant (the Harbor Haus) at Copper Harbor, but that's a 32 Mile drive. The closer restaurants are fairly pedestrian.
Having said that, take the scenic drive to Copper Harbor, that means hugging the shore line all the way, and enjoy the spectacular vistas of Lake superior. That drive alone is worth the inconvenience of the dirt road for the last mile to the resort. Yes I could come back in my pickup truck, but then I'd missed the convertible on the scenic drive.
We are considering returning late in the season to take in the color changes. Plan b, would be to bring the truck and come up in the winter. I have to believe this area in deep snow would be out...
Read moreWe spent three nights at Keweenaw Castle traveling from Minnesota for our wedding, and it was absolutely perfect. The setting is stunning, a beautiful, private lakefront property that made our celebration feel like a true getaway.||Ann, our on-site coordinator, was wonderful to work with. She helped us plan every detail and made sure things ran smoothly all weekend. We brought our own decor and flowers, but the venue itself was so beautiful it didn’t need much.||We also highly recommend Jeremy Berryman from Fitzgerald’s for a wedding dinner at the Keweenaw Castle, it was amazing. Everything, the ceremony, dinner, party, and lodging happened right on site, which made the entire experience seamless and stress-free. Our guests loved being able to relax and stay together in one place, and there were plenty of things to do nearby for couples and our older kids, from exploring the shoreline to enjoying the hot tub and firepit.||That said, Keweenaw Castle isn’t a traditional turnkey wedding venue, so expect to do a bit more planning yourself. You may need to bring your own decor, flowers, and vendors, and some logistics can be trickier to coordinate remotely. We’re very detail-oriented planners, so it took extra effort to figure out exactly what to bring, but it was 100% worth it for the privacy, setting, and overall experience. The castle offered the perfect mix of luxury, comfort, and privacy. It truly felt like having our own private resort for the weekend. We couldn’t have imagined a better place to host such an important moment in our lives.||Highly recommend Keweenaw Castle for anyone looking for a romantic, all-in-one destination wedding venue in Michigan’s...
