King Birch Motor Lodge — Hotel in Alton

The rooms are very older style so if you're looking for a more modern place to stay this probably isn't your kind of motel. The amenities though, were exactly what we needed. Full kitchens (full size older fridge, stove, small oven, coffee maker, toaster, NO microwave...all things I wish I could have made out in the pictures on the website), air conditioning, sofa, queen size bed, cable TV. The full kitchen allowed us to save tons of money on eating out. We were able to prepare our own breakfasts and dinners (we were out for lunches). The only downfall to this was the utensils, pots and pans were not quite what was needed for our cooking, but we had three rooms so between the three we were able to come up with what we did need. So if you're planning to do most of your own cooking I'd recommend you bring the tools you know you'll need. They also had grills for guest use and we made sure to take advantage!||The landscaping and views around the motel were great. Nothing fancy, but a perfect lakeside retreat. There really is no beach to speak of for sunbathing or hanging out but there is a great spot to swim which is nice and sandy on the bottom.||It's also a great place to bring or rent a boat. They have a dock that guests can request space at in advance. We wish we had brought ours so we could have spent some time out on the lake which was absolutely beautiful. Strange place. Totally managed by vacasa online and NO HUMANS ONSITE AT ALL.|Good thing neighbor was tgere to show us how to get in using code/lockbox|No office, no people when we soon discovered our toilet didnt flush and the ancient plunger artifact from 1942 was useless.|Best of all, the local number POSTED in the room was useless too! A non working number!!!|After a day and a half of ridiculous online communication and texting asking for details over amd over and over describing the problem, someone showed up while we were out and fixed it. |Musty old old smell, dim dark lights, NO LIGHTBULB IN MAIN LIGHT OVER BED and repeated requests to bring one went nowhere. |Everything from the coffeemaker to the lamps was from ancient times. The lake is great, the problem was the accommodations. The smell of the room was musty, the kitchen dishes were dirty. Food from precious guest were still on the dishes. The carpet had not been cleaned properly. Would have left but there were no other accommodations. My family and I cleaned all the dishes, vacuumed the room and tried fo make the best of it. That night was awful, we got bit by bedbugs! !! That was it. While the kids were playing in the lake I bought a bedbug spray. Sprayed the whole room, mattress' and all the bedding. Instead of being on Vacation I was working. We ended up cutting our vacation short. The worst thing was that the manager did not see anything wrong...
