Our visit this year was the most diasspointing, this park is loud with rude people that don't respect the quiet hours and this park echos so everything seems super loud. Maybe staff need to point out quiet hours when people check in. It's well shaded which means when it rains it never dries out. Site 15 floods. We had water up to our ankles in our site and under our tent. Bathrooms were never cleaned and maintained, showers were dirty, bathroom floors are always wet and dirty with toilet paper stewn everywhere, and 2 stalls out of paper, the only one with paper was out of order. Mens and womens showers both have 1 shower with no pressure, just a fine mist thats cold. Update 8-8-24, this place is a mess, no fault to the park staff. Dump station is out of order, the only way to fill water is at the main building. We sat here for over 45 minutes in line waiting to fill as the hose is so low pressure. Showers are freezing cold. Couldn't stand in the water, had to stand off to the side as it was frigid. Mud in the shower stalls. Office said they are cleaned daily though which is weird as there was the same roll of toilet paper on the floor by the garbage all weekend long. We were here 2 weekends in a row.
This is a beautiful state park and we loved our site. It was a very large non electric site. We booked last minute, same day as we were at a different campground that was kind of loud. Well moving here was a mistake. It was so loud we couldn't sleep. We were in loop E and the staff said upon check in it was a nice quiet loop. Farthest thing from truth. We could hear what sounded like bar music off in a distance but still so loud we could make out the lyrics, a large group of extremely loud young campers, yelling and hollering all day, heavy doors slamming non stop all night long and our neighbors with big extremely bright spotlights that literally lit up the whole forest and shined through our pop up. Saddest thing is I called a ranger at 10:15 to see if they could quiet down the large group, I was told they were planning on making rounds and would address it, an hour later still very loud, so apparently nothing was done as it continued the whole night. The vault toilet was so strong of ammonia we couldn't use it because it severely burned our lungs and eyes. Closest shower is a distance away in D loop and nowhere to park by the bathrooms. I have never left a state park so disappointed and probably won't return. I definitely felt like I wasted money on this...
Read moreI would like to state this is the first bad review I've ever left somebody and I see similar reviews now that I'm looking more into it. I'm going to keep this short but none the less, so we purchased there 8 dollar bundle of firewood that burns in less than ten min, so my wife and I stayed here 1 night with our toddler and when we were starting the fire we grabbed 1 dead branch from next to our tent, a dead branch from a downed tree, I was simply breaking it up for a little kindling to start the fire because all I had were these logs from the bundle and within 15 min here comes a "park ranger" asking me to put the sticks back in the woods..which I did, "it was made from wood and I thought it should be with its family" (Happy Gilmore) She insisted we buy "fire starters" from the office.. so we packed up our toddler and drove home quickly because I had fire wood logs and branches from yard work in my backyard which is 10 min away in the same county.. Fast forward the next morning another park ranger comes up to us saying "I noticed you gathered firewood from the woods" I said this is from my house, so again I can start the fire, he then he proceeds to tell me that bringing other wood in the park for a fire is bad for the wildlife.. I asked him in what world is using a chemical fire starter better for the environment than burning natural wood from my backyard, which he did not reply on account of not having a response. My wife and I are big campers and love nature we did nothing that was bad for the environment other than proceed to be very stressed out because of the "environmental hall monitors they have scouring the park" I recommend enjoying nature instead of trying to control it thank you for the evening but with all due respect we will not be coming back which I'm sure your...
Read moreStay: the park does a good job at having eat campsite feel separated from another. Prepare for the effects of crippling infrastructure and lack of funding tho because this is a state park, and this is camping too. The bathroom were very clean (coming from the perspective of camp bathrooms). The outhouse has no ventilation, so it will smell if you have to go in there. Bring your deodorant with you to hold under your nose if the smell bothers you.
Hike: It's MN near a river if you're not expecting bugs you're going to learn real quick. My partner is allergic (horribly) to mosquitoes, so we use 100 deet (on clothes only, never put directly on skin); this worked but paired with 15 deet on the skin it kept the bugs from biting. They will still buzz in you ear, so being a hat with a net for more comfort.
Park Ranger: Please be more vocal and put out more notices about people leaving food out and feeding animals. The deer are fearless here, while it's really cool to see deer feet away, this also shows that the animals see people and know there's food. This is an massive issue, and fines need to be given out to people who leave food out at night and don't take the proper precautions for having respect to the wildlife. We got no alert or notice from the rangers here, and this is a park that sees a lot of first time campers; there needs to be more educations for the public.
Other: driving around is gorgeous here if the heat is too much to handle, the visitor center is a must stop, and there's a picnic beach area too. But be aware there are a lot of people who have no regard for Leave No Trace or are novice campers and might not be aware of...
