Corps of Engineers campgrounds are generally great overall, and I tend to choose over others if available. This one has had a lot of recent tree work done...as in many trees were cut down...and left me wanting more in terms of shade and aesthetics. The hosts were friendly and bathrooms were clean; although only one of the two showers worked. I only gave 3 stars because my site was overrun with ants. Woke up in the middle of the night with one crawling across my face. Next morning I find several more on the blanket. Go outside and find thousands, yes thousands, in single file marching on ground the entire length on the camper and up every tire, jack, hose, anything touching the ground, making every edge, corner, door frame and window sill covered in a solid line of ants. If you can visualize drawing or tracing the outline of a camper, including outlines of the doors and windows, thats what was actually lined with solid ants. To make things worse, I didnt have any ant spray so I grabbed the hose and started spraying them off. By now at least 50-100 had breeched the bedroom and more were infiltrating other areas. I had barely hosed off half of one side of the camper when the host came to notify me that another camper had reported me violating rules, saying I was washing my camper and was told to stop using the hose. I explained the situation, and that one of our dogs has a severe allergic reaction to ant bites so needed to do something quickly considering the large numbers. Visual evidence of the army of ants, that I wasnt washing camper, dog allergies, none of that mattered, and was asked to stop using the hose. He explained, (and I do appreciate his tact and disposition throughout this exchange), that even though no soap was used, it was considered as disposing of grey water on site, and could be given a ticket for illegal dumping under title 36. It was suggested that I go buy an insecticide or sevendust to put on, in, around my camper instead. ...Now I'm no steven hawking or john muir, but seems to me it would be a more ticketable offense or 'grey' area to apply toxic chemicals, which will eventually become chemical waters with the next rain and/or batch of wet swimmers, than to spray drinking water from the hose on the ants. On a waterfront site mere feet from the shoreline, I would rather risk having dirty camper water runoff in to the lake than sevendust, roundup, and other products whose purpose by design is to kill living things. Thats just me, but hey, what do I know? They do not provide insect control or prevention im told, there were no other sites available to move to, and my camper now had ant lines forming in nearly every living area and on anything outside that was touching the ground. But I am not one to disrespect or knowingly violate federal regulations, so I stopped spraying the water hose, went to town, and bought 2 jugs of insecticide. Clenching on to my deep seeded and unwavering disgust for all things Monsanto, I felt my moral fortitude wither away just a little as I sprayed the hell out of the camper, ground, and the campsite's rotten timbers which were serving as the ant's multi family housing complex. So to Mr. or Mrs. I-don't-know-for-sure-what-they-are-doing-but-im-gonna-tattle-tell-anyway-because-it-makes-me-feel-important, I say thank you for that whole experience and the extra 30 miles, $40 dollars, and 2 hours wasted that day. After that, the ants remained outside in their timbers and on the ground, but was able to keep them out of camper and away from the pup. If we had not needed close proximity to do work for to a client nearby, I probably would have packed up and left. And I probably will never stay at Springfield in fhe future based on...
Read moreWe just got in from 1 of the worst camping trip's imaginable. We went to Springfield Campground in Anderson S.C. We went in on Sunday July 14th and came back July 20th. Our site was nasty from previous campers, bottle cap's and cigarettes butt's all over the site. The picnic table had been moved & it was a heavy one @ that, we had to get out of the truck and move it so, we could get the camper in. They're ant's every where, we had to buy ant spray. We had camped there 15 - 20 year's ago and it looked nothing like it did back then. There is no keep up to this place what so, ever. Our breaker kept tripping & they had to put a new 1 in. We saw the clean up crew that's suppose to check the sites after ones left it 1 time & then they didn't do anything but, ride in & left. Now the staff at the gate was wonderful sweet, helpful people. That's the only good thing. Our grandkids couldn't play on the playground because of ant's. This is a shame that this place has gotten like it has. No, excuse what so,ever. We will not go back and we will tell our family and friends about the condition of the Campground... We noticed that as people came in yesterday and today they were putting white powder stuff down on the ground and my husband asked a guy that came in beside what was he doing & he said we have to put it down, it's ant killer. He said ant's are every where. A very dissatisfied campers we are & wanted to...
Read moreWell my father in law and I got here before my wife and mother in law and when we pulled up to the gate the man said what lot and I said lot 77! He looked at his paperwork and said Sharon waldron and I said yes then he looked at me and said you better hope your last name is the same because if not your not getting in and you will have to wait outside the gate. So I said it's the same! He said let me see your i.d so I showed it to him and he said usually we still don't let you in but this time I will. So we pulled in answering started setting everything up I hooked the water up and and went to something else and as we where waiting on the wife and her mom we went to the store to get a few things. The next day the gate keeper pulled up to our site gets out of his truck and said who is in charge here and I said my wife is thinking about the hard time he give us when we got here and he looks at me a said I would rather show you so I said what is it and he said you see that leak we can't have that so get it fixed. So I looked at him and said the a/c leaks more water then that little drop from the water line he said don't kill the messenger but the ranger seen it and told me to tell so I'm thinking the ranger was snooping around our lot while we were gone to the store so I will not recommend this place and I will not be back it seemed that they harassed us from the time we pulled into the time...
