A very well maintained and beautiful campground. We were in NG07 for 5 days first part of October. A wonderful spot with a view of the meadow. Great trails, one day we drove to Ebbetts Pass. So very beautiful if you have time. One thing I couldn't find before arriving was the size of the bear box. We have a 60 qt. Coleman on wheels and it fit with a small amount of space to spare in height. We brought locks but you can tell from the picture they have a latch attached to the box. The box opens from both sides which was great. We had a big problem with yellow jackets in October. Cooking and eating was a challenge. You can get wood and anything that you might have forgotten at the hardware in Arnold. Wood is $5.99 and not much smoke.

Restrooms and pay showers facilities (3) are clean and conveniently located throughout the campground. At least half of the campsites are set up on a slight hill which are not attractive for sleeping. Visitor center and Park entrance are within short walking distance. Site #43: Pros: +Large lot +Set back and somewhat isolated with only 1 adjoining neighbor Cons: -Set on a slight incline -Aggressive bees and mosquitoes -Back of campsite is exposed to open land where a park ranger stated a bear is most commonly sited to enter the campground -No separate grill -Dog barks next to hill are echoed like a megaphone -Dust everywhere

We had an amazing two-night stay that left us feeling completely refreshed. The campground had some great aspects, like the calming presence of ancient 2000-year-old trees and the soothing sounds of frogs and birds. The rangers were also really kind and helpful. The only downside was the noise near spots 23, 25, and 27, which were too close to the road. We ended up requesting a change, but luckily there were vacant campsites available. Overall, it was a great experience, except for the noise issue.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park Campground offers a unique opportunity to camp among the awe-inspiring giant sequoia trees. Here's a breakdown of the campground to help you decide if it's the right fit for you:

Pros:

Location, Location, Location: The campground sits right next to the North Grove of giant sequoias, with easy access to hiking trails. Some campsites are spacious, with plenty of room for families and even large rigs (depending on the campground loop). The park itself is close to charming towns and wineries. Basic Amenities: Each site has a fire ring, picnic table, and access to water spigots. There are flushing toilets and shower facilities (although showers may be coin-operated). Ranger Programs: The park rangers offer informative talks and activities, which is a great way to learn more about the sequoia trees and the surrounding...

Yellow jackets were bad this year but still were tolerable. They were flying around but they weren't "bite-y". We bought some traps at the hardware store in Arnold which helped. Also, waiting for other campers to start cooking first or leaving a small bit of food just out of our camp about 5 min or so before cooking helped keep them at bay. Sort of "feed the meat bees first" way of dealing with them. We were careful to clean up everything before going to bed and glad we did as we were visited by bears 3 of our 5 nights. They can open the bear bin doors so be sure to chain them shut. The meteor shower was spectacular from the Vista point as well as...
