Camp Fireside Inc — Hotel in Barrington

I do NOT recommend this camp if your child has special needs. They offered no accommodations for our son despite our open, honest communication about his ADHD, struggles, and strengths. They assured us that they would work with us to help him to succeed. However, he was asked not to return to camp after an issue with one of the junior camp counselors. They notified us of this via email, which is insanely unprofessional. They refused to meet with us or work on the issue. This was an isolated event, which was triggered by the junior counselor's response to him becoming upset about being cut in line. I found out recently from another parent that the junior counselor had likely bullyied my son on several occasions. He came home one day crying because another child put sand in his hair, which I now understand was from the junior counselor. I asked my son about my concerns, he reported that the adult counselor "went away somewhere" a lot and she wasn't around to help. My son told me that this junior counselor was "really, really mean" and he "did a lot of mean things to me." It's extremely upsetting that the adults at Camp Fireside would allow this type of behavior to occur. I feel like they set our son up for failure and then tossed him out. He has been in a different camp for two full weeks now. The counselors said that he is "very busy, but very kind and thoughtful." This is my son's first year at Camp Fireside and I hope to send him again next year. He enjoys arts & crafts, archery, outdoor games, sports, and swims at the lake every day with a bunch of friends. What better way to spend the summer?!? Plus he gets a hot, homemade lunch everyday (hotdogs, tacos, pasta, watermelon, salad, graham crackers) - all kinds of good stuff that most kids enjoy.
