Discovered RRC via Google search for local campgrounds. Their website was informative and prices were very reasonable compared to other campgrounds in the area. The campground has a variety of sites either down by the river or further in the woods. Made reservations and received confirmation the following day. The campground was easy to get to and just a short drive down a gravel road brings you to the property. Checking in was a bit frustrating however. Check in was 3pm and we arrived shortly before. A sign at the office asked to call or text Erik as he was at the river. There was no other staff at the office. We called, and it rang to voicemail and we waited for a call back. After some time we also sent a text and after waiting close to 30 minutes with no response we went to the river and found Erik (owner), cutting away a fallen tree by the boat ramp. He was friendly, helpful and allowed us to pick which site we wanted. The campground and sites were clean and spaced out enough for privacy. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There are stairs/ small boat launch leading to the river. Plenty of trees provided shade to keep the site cool and a nice breeze coming off the river. Potable water spigots were within close proximity to sites. Outhouse privies are available in close walking distance. The toilet seat and area were pretty clean despite some people leaving the lid open which caused odor build up even though a sign is present to close the lid. Private shower stalls are available with locking doors and hooks for clothes/towels. The doors could be replaced as some holes are present. The stalls were free of trash but could be power washed to help eliminate spider webs and other bugs. Despite these minor issues, the water pressure was surprisingly amazing to rinse off after exploring the river. Water temperature was pleasant and provided enough warm water for a decent shower. Fire wood is available for sale on-site to pick yourself from a tarp covered pile. Dead and fallen wood is free to gather and use if you please as well. There are open fields for games and activities. However there is not a lot children friendly activities, (no playground). Fishing is available at an on-site pond or in the river. There are shallow spots in the river to explore and wade in, but small rapids were nearby so appropriate safety measures should be taken for children. There is no shuttle service available at this time should you use the boat ramp for a canoe or kayak.
Overall we had a wonderful relaxing experience at this off the beaten path campground. We are excited to see what Erik, (new owner), does with the property and experience what he has to offer in the future. We will definitely be returning for more adventures and recommend...
Read moreThis is the email I just sent the campaign place it was the worse experience ever ||Dear sir or madam ||Please be advised that your staff harassed me about me not having a car with me and it doesn’t say anywhere at all that I had to bring my car with me because my wife had it at the hospital because our daughter was having a child she was in the hospital so we got dropped off me and my 70 year old father in law! So first of all we were harassed because my brother in law dropped us off. So the lady that was there at check in told us we wasn’t allowed to be there without a car because people have been asking other guests for rides out of the camp site. I insured the nasty attitude, lady that I had a ride to pick us up. She made me very uncomfortable. Then I proceeded to tell her even my ride didn’t show up. I know how to use Uber in a cab. I have a cell phone and credit cards, which is not any of her concern nor business! We checked in at 12:00 Friday the 4th then we finally got to our ten and we rented a tent from yall! We were not satisfied with the tent that we had so we tried to pay the difference and get put into a cabin. The lady refused to do it and there was a cabin open I personally checked the website before I asked, and there was cabins available on your site so maybe y’all should inform your employees that you do have a website so what y’all have available so they don’t lie to the customers! We were willing to pay the difference. We didn’t wanna be in the nasty tent with the black mold with my 70-year-old father-in-law. Then another employee came a question whether I should’ve been there or not, and he started on me then he tried to play it off keep being rude and nasty by trying to carry a conversation with my father-in-law, which is 70 years old and could not hear what the man said! My experience was so bad. I had my brother-in-law come pick us up at 9:30 this morning so I lost out over $100 because y’all‘s employees are very rude. Nasty unprofessional and your tents are covered in black mold. I was scared to let him sleep in another night. Hopefully he doesn’t get sick but if he does, you will hear back thank you. Have a great day. My review will be posted for the site. Just as the letter reads...
Read moreOkay, so I didn't get to stay here but I would love to. I went on a kayaking trip with two friends after graduating college and they saved our butts. We started at Kelly's Ford and we're attempting to make it to Motts Run in two days. It's probably very doable if you're just paddling. We were fishing and camping as well. Needless to say, we didn't get anywhere near far enough and after two days only made it as far as the campground. We had a novice kayaker with us who took a couple of spills with one being serious and wanted to just stop and get out at the campground.
I got out on some private property that I mistook for the campground and hiked through the woods on the gravel road for maybe 30 minutes to an hour trying to find someone to help me get back to my vehicle at Motts Run. Finally I came up to the Rappahannock River Outfitters and met Ryan. He was a complete blessing and helped me get back to my friends and get to the kayak launch at the campground. By sheer luck, his wife ended up bringing my friend and I back to our truck on her way to work back in town. I couldn't believe how gracious they both were and how lucky I was to be helped by them both. A huge storm was about two hours behind us and had we not got off the river we may have been seriously injured or even killed.
I will be staying at this campground the next chance I get. It is private and small but on a beautiful piece of land managed by people who love to share the experience.
The only thing I wish had changed is that I couldn't get ahold of anyone when I called the number on the website. It's not a year-round, fully staffed campground. It's a private campground that opens it's doors to share the beauty it offers. It's not a money trap but instead a way to offer people a chance to visit this slice of heaven. However, in the future, please call back people who frantically want to get off the river once they realize they won't make Motts and will pay to be taken back to town.
If you're in the area, call them and come see what beauty they have to offer, you won't be...
