We stayed for one night at this B&B. It is one of the few choices available outside the park but it is quite a distance from the park entrance ~45 mins. We booked it as we were going to head back to Vegas so didn’t mind it being out of the way but the weather made it farther than it was due to slow driving conditions . The closest and quite a small town of Bixby is around 40 mins away and has some basic amenities but nothing big so plan accordingly. This place is in middle of nowhere so try and get there before it gets dark. Our stay was ok. The hospitality is great, we got upgraded to the Asian suite which was nice but it had different amenities than the standard room which we had originally booked. Jennifer and Nigel were great both during our stay and before when we called to ask about few things. We were able to use the full kitchen to heat/ prep our dinner which we were advised to get with us or have it in Bixby before getting there. We got there on a relatively colder and wet day so did not spend a lot of time outdoors but that is an option. It is very serene and quiet and the peacocks on the property are a delight. The reasons for a 4 star rating are few oddities which kind of are expected but still maybe would help another traveler decide. The mattress in our room was way too soft- if one person was on the bed the other person will roll towards them because of how soft it was. There were hair on our duvet which was little eww- and also dust in the room. The bed and bedsheets were clean so I just shook the duvet and ignored it. The main area had a smell like a cat’s litter and it was not great when the windows were closed due to the cold. I think they sprayed some room freshener after a bit but it was little off putting. There was a cat on the property which I don’t mind and it was outside when we came. When we went to heat our dinner it was inside and jumped twice on the kitchen shelves and island while we were prepping our food- again not an issue as we were able to shoo it down but can be an issue if you are allergic and/ or mind cats being so close to your food. Breakfast in the morning was ok- simple home cooked meal which we appreciated. Lot of great tips on how to plan our day from Nigel which was helpful. Overall if we were staying more than a night we would have not chosen to stay here but for one...
Read moreThe owner of Shady Lady, Jennifer, is one of my favorite people in this whole wide world. We walked in and she was wearing a cheetah print coat and a bright orange hoodie and just looked cool as heck. Turns out - she is.
Her and Paul were not only welcoming and accommodating, but became our friends over the two days that we stayed at Shady Lady. Jennifer is hilarious, she’s stylish, and she is so kind. She loves animals and she genuinely cares about her guests. She has a pet goat, cats, and about 40 peacocks and she takes great care of all of them. You can tell they are beloved.
This was not only my favorite lodging of the trip - it was probably my favorite lodging ever. I would drive far out of my way just to spend more time with the two of them and to witness the beautiful mountains they’re surrounded by.
Staying here is being part of history. It’s also being welcomed into a wonderful family. Shady Lady has a piece of my heart now. Jennifer and Paul stood outside and waved at us until they literally couldn’t see us anymore when we left. So much love here. So much goodness.
That said, if you’re unlike me and want straight forward lodging with minimal interaction, they will absolutely accommodate that as well. I believe Jennifer has a strong sense of intuition for what people are looking for in an experience and adjusts according to what they need.
The beds are super comfy and the themed rooms are exactly as they were when this was a functioning brothel. They are beautiful.
You will have access to a full bathroom, kitchen, and living room during your stay. Paul made a delicious and visually appearing breakfast every morning and always had coffee brewing by the time we rolled out of bed. We were able to share a meal with other guests the first morning and chat about travels.
It might seem like Shady Lady is in the middle of nowhere, but sometimes that’s where you need to be to decompress. It’s only about 30-60 minutes in either direction to Tonopah or Beatty and the drive goes by fast. If you’re feeling exploratory, check out Goldfield and Gemfield. We preferred Goldfield over the bigger towns.
Thank you, Jennifer and Paul, for an amazing experience! I’m excited to stay in touch. More photos (these are just my phone...
Read moreI want to start by saying, I had a wonderful time. The owners are friendly, helpful, warm & welcoming, and communicative. I remembered seeing this place as a kid, and I didn't realize it'd been made into a bed & breakfast, with peacocks roaming the grounds, so I had to go. The price was reasonable, room was clean with a comfortable bed & a hot shower. My room was switched when I arrived to put me toward the front of the inn, which I didn't have an issue with. However, the room I'd initially looked at had a tv, so it ended up being a quiet, boring night (I hadn't thought to bring a book or my laptop). Also the "themed" rooms are kitschy & fun, but not as impressive in person as online photos suggest. Which leads me to the location: obviously when you book, you know it's in the middle of nowhere, but you need to plan for it. Luckily when I called to check my reservation earlier in the day, the warned me to have or bring dinner. The nearest town is Beatty, and there aren't many places to get food there. Luckily, I'd been in Pahrump earlier that day and brought food from there. Speaking of food, the complimentary breakfast was delicious and lovely. The others guests and I sat at a nice dining room table with actual place settings, and were made a delicious home-cooked meal, which we could smell coming from the kitchen. It felt like a nice family breakfast, with everyone sharing where they were headed next. A fun and pleasant experience if you plan for it and find yourself staying...
