IMPORTANT NOTE: This campground is NOT open to the public! It is a corporate-owned employee/retiree retreat ONLY!
I would normally have given 5 stars, but with the removal of the bulk of the forest and thereby nearly ALL privacy, and the lack of cleanup from said deforestation, I had to take off 2 stars. The idea of restoring this small piece of land to oak savanna might be noble to some, but Mother Nature had different ideas. The varied trees were NOT planted by humans, but occurred through natural seeding by animals and the environment. The funny but sad thing is while the oak trees were spared, so too, was the invasive Buckthorn, which will now thrive and kill off the oaks.
8/16/23 Well, privacy is no longer an issue, but that's because the result of clear-cutting so many trees is that the underbrush has grown out of control, leaving the park rather unsightly and an excellent breeding ground for rodents and insects. Rest assured, no invasive buckthorn was harmed in the process, but many birds were from eating buckthorn berries.
Also, new management seems incapable of maintaining the pool, so we were unable to swim during a heat wave. The pool is covered in green algae. Finally, they also seem bent on bankrupting the campground, as they didn't bill us (or others we know)...
Read moreI could seriously go on and on about this place! My husband and I stayed here for an entire summer for work purposes and it was AMAZING!! Most of the spots are very secluded which makes it feel very personal. In most campgrounds the spots are about on top of each other, but not this one!!! Not to mention there were a ton of small trails, and some even lead to other campsites which I thought was funny😂 The price was very fair and the family that helps run it are super kind and helpful with whatever you need! Most of the spots have a ton of trees in and around the sites which helps with a lot of good shade! My favorite spot is 22, our yard was HUGE, and this campground is very quiet and peaceful! Our dog absolutely loved it here, maybe even more than we did!! The pool was clean and the bathrooms were too, although they’re pretty outdated. Oaks is seriously my favorite campground we’ve ever been to, and we’ve been in the road for work for 2 years! I would come back again and again, this place...
Read moreWe come here every year because it has everything we're looking for. It has that small family friendly and family owned vibe, wooded areas with lots of trees and trails to explore, access to the river, heated pool, showers and bathrooms, fire pits, tables, electric and water, clean sites, concession stand with more than reasonable prices and it's not far from home but feels like a world away. I'm sure I'm missing some things that make oaks on the River great but I hit upon most of the biggies that come to mind. Not all sites are equal so I recommend driving down there and write down the sites that you'd prefer. Even the worst sites are good but there are many that are much more isolated and private. It's also not far from town so if and when you forget something you're a short car ride away...
