Balsam mountain campground site 14 review

Plenty of room to park, length and width. Parking is in the sun and a bit pitched in two directions, about two legos front to back and about one lego from the outside edge to the curb. The parking spot gets plenty of sun most of the day.

The tent pad gets a decent amount of shade most parts of the day, some strong sun around mid-day. Shade all day long under the old conifers that are great for hammocks.

Reception - spotty T-Mobile reception on the phone, spotty with the WeBoost and 5g mifi hot spot, but enough to keep in touch. Got starlink working best spots in the road in front of the sprinter or back on spot 16 by their tent pad.

It's a pretty remote campground, paved road all the way in, so much better than Cattaloochee. Some people are just here for one night, some for several nights. It's pretty quiet and low noise overall, no generators running, no kids running around. Almost always a breeze which is moderated by the trees that protect from all sides. Never a line in the bathroom. Very friendly and...

Oh! To be cold in the Southeast in August! This federal campground is at 5300 ft above sea level. It is often in the clouds, but the sun does come through. It's close enough to Cherokee and Waynesville that (Verizon) cell phones work.... And if you are into it, there is also tv reception. But.... You better have a functioning cell.... There is no park office or store. You have to call an 800 number (be prepared to wait on hold) to register. Those without Verizon were in a quandry. There is a volunteer camp host who is very nice, but let's just say this placed is a little loosey goosey. The bathrooms are like many federal campground bathrooms... No showers, no warm water and no lighting. But they were clean and at the end of the day, that means alot. This campground is off the beaten track, it's a hidden gem. We stayed longer than planned because we simply loved being in the Smokey Mountains at this elevation without so many people. We took some wonderful walks, saw a moose, wore jeans in July, cooked marshmallows every night, and had a...

What a beautiful place. Its too bad it’s the Wild West of campgrounds. I’ve been to some busy campgrounds but never one where there was with no control. The host is a nice guy but really just craziness in what should be a great campground based on location. . Kids yelling and honking horns through morning starting at 630 am. The same family yelling and promising to β€œspank you” so all campground can hear… A dog allowed to bark much of day for 3 days, guest leaving out of frustration. There was even on older gentleman that had a ham radio which he left on speaker so everyone could hear every trucker/weather person he spoke to. I always use used a headset out of respect for people around me. Not at this campground you can do whatever you want. I love camping this was far from camping. The only good thing was the bathrooms were very clean. I’ve camped at a lot of places and would go back to all except this one. It was that bad and really the host wasn’t doing what...

Wonderful experience. Stayed at site #10. Tent pads are flat and solid. Site comes with a very large picnic table, and a fire ring with grate to cook on. Plenty of room for a canopy to go over top. A nice mix of RV's and tents. Many folks had large 3-8 person tents that the sites accommodated nicely. Some sites have perfect trees to set up a hammock, too. There are bathroom facilities on each end of the grounds, so not far to walk in either direction. Keep in mind, no shower facilities. Small and quaint. The camp hosts were so incredibly pleasant and helpful. Lots of hiking either a short walk or short drive from the grounds. Dogs are allowed, but must be kept on a leash/tie-out. The grounds had full reservations, but I never felt like it was overcrowded. All the other campers were very pleasant and friendly. This was my first experience camping at a campground, and I'm happy I chose this location to be my first.

Love this wild place! Will definitely come back. A nice campground, but be aware there are no showers. Just 2 sets of restrooms, with no lights. Very small, and you need to reserve online. But SUCH a beautiful setting and drive to get there. Lots of wildlife and trails nearby. Bring a jacket, even in the summer. One note: if you have a large tent, it likely won't fit on the tent pads. We have a family of 6, and a 14' wide tent. The tent hung off over the tent pad on one side a couple of feet. Anything 12' and under, you should be good. Lots of wild turkeys on the roadsides on the way up in the evening. Apparently elk can sometimes be seen as well. Very good spot for birding as well, with blackburnian and chestnut-sides warblers easy to find, as well as least flycatchers, black throated green warblers, and blue headed vireos.
