We like to travel to a different Indiana State Park Inn for spring break every year and this was our first time checking out Canyon Inn. We were very pleased with our stay! We stayed for 2 nights in one of the Queen Studio Rooms on the 3rd floor. It was so nice to have the extra space in the studio room to stretch out and allow our toddler to play after a day of adventures in the park. I would highly suggest these rooms for families of littles as they’re a great size and have a fridge and microwave included as well. We checked-in on the one year anniversary of the EF-3 tornado that hit the park in 2023. We knew coming to the park, that the majority of the trails were still closed, but decided to come anyways. You can tell that business is slow because of how quiet the Inn, Restaurant, and Park was throughout our stay. However, you can tell that the staff still takes great pride in this Park and Inn. The Inn is over 100 years old, so we were not expecting a luxurious stay by any means. The rooms are quaint, but comfortable. I was very impressed by how clean our room was! Having a toddler, we like to wipe down surfaces when we get to hotels and as I wiped down our room, everything was so clean and I didn’t pick up any dirt or grime. That’s the most important for me! You can tell the Inn is in need of some good TLC, like wall paint touch-ups, new couches in room, update to bathrooms etc. Even with its age and wear, it is well cared for and again… clean! The staff is incredibly kind as well. I especially want to shout out Allison, who was the front desk receptionist when we checked-in. She was so friendly and welcoming. When we got there, the weather was warm. When we got to our room, we could tell the air conditioning was not working. We let Allison know right away and she told us how to turn it on correctly and asked us to give it some time. The air conditioning never turned on, so she called maintenance, who was in our room within 20 mins. When it was decided that it could not be fixed, we were quickly moved to a new room. Allison was so quick to action and understanding, it really started our trip out on the right foot despite the hiccup! Outside of our stay at the Inn, we enjoyed dinner at the restaurant 2 nights in a row. It is so nice to have the restaurant right there, we didn’t need to leave the park during our entire stay! Our stay was during the week, so they didn’t have the full buffet, but they did have a lovely soup and salad bar. The salad bar was very fresh and the soup was delicious. Outside of the soup and salad bar, they also have a full menu (it is the same as every other state park restaurant, but still delicious). We had the same waitress both nights- Rhonda- who was an absolute sweetheart and so kind! She learned that this was our first trip to McCormick Creek SP and gave us local suggestions and sights to see while we are down in this area. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! It was the perfect getaway for our little family. We hope that with the Solar Eclipse next week (we were told they expect a large crowd for that) that people will see that that McCormick Creek SP and Canyon Inn are open for business and that it has so much to offer despite the set-backs it experienced in 2023. We also hope that the Inn can get some love and updates as they work to fully reopen the park.

The Canyon Inn is within McCormick's Creek State Park in Spencer, Indiana. The Inn was originally a sanitarium in the early 20th century. It was known for its natural springs and "healing waters". There are maybe 10 miles of trails in the park, which range from easy to rugged. McCormick's Creek State Park is Indiana's first state park. The park has a stone bridge over the creek which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps also known as the CCC. The property at the Inn also includes a recreational area that offers a swimming pool, volleyball and basketball courts and handball courts. There is also a riding stable on the property, but it is currently limited due to Covid. An additional feature of the Inn is the dining room. The prices are reasonable and the food is good. Many Indiana State Parks have Inns within their boundaries that harken back to the days before large amusement parks dominated family's travel destinations. These Inns are meant for people and families who enjoy nature and the peace and quiet of life outdoors.

Canyon Inn was a very pleasant experience. Our queen deluxe room on the 3rd floor was nice, although the room was an odd shape and some of the furniture placement was interesting...but overall the room was good. The front desk was very helpful at check in and check out. They recently switch to electronic key cards instead of the old fashioned room keys that a lot of the parks used to have and are transitioning away from, which I think is a shame as I always enjoyed that little bit of nostalgia when staying at a State park Inn. The restaurant food was pretty good. I liked the spicy burger I ordered. Also, ask to sit in the bird watching room. Nice scenery to take in. The Inn is ideally located in the park and I was pleased with the additional amenities and services available. Looking forward to coming back again, soon.

I gave three stars because the service was fantastic and the wifi was good. The room itself easily deserved two stars. ||1. Shower had mold in it. Not just a little mold either, between all the tiles and in the corners of the stall. |2. Room setup was ridiculous. The (small) queen bed was pushed up against the wall and only one side had a nightstand. I used the room trashcan and turned it upside down to have something to set my water and meds on — even that barely fit between the bed and the wall. |3. Only one outlet near the bed, and plugs fell out when we tried using it. Ended up unplugging the alarm so we could charge our stuff. |4. When neighbors coughed at night it sounded like they were in our room. I understand hotels have thin walls, but the volume and clarity of our neighbor's subtle noises were almost comical. |5. The room thermostat was a joke. We couldn't get the room cool in March, I can only imagine the summer room temps. |6. The bed lamps had two drastically different light bulbs in them—one bright white, one soft warm. You couldn't have both lights on at once. Seems trivial, but taking the above factors into account, it was the icing on the cake. | |The last thing I want to add is parking. Love the EV charging stations, hated their location. Even in March, the parking lots are full every night. The charging stations were the next best spots to handicap parking. When we arrived it was dark, cold, and pouring rain. The only open spots in the first parking lot were charging stations, so I felt I couldn't take it. The next day, I noticed the Tesla parked there wasn't even using the charger. Wish the parks department (or whoever) would've spent a little more money and moved the stations farther from the building. Especially as parking spots are a precious...
