This was definitely an unexpected find. We were looking for an interesting place to stop on the way home since we got tired. I had seen in several post when I was planning the trip about Shaker Village. I did some research and we ended up there.
The rooms are quite varied. You can stay in buildings that only have four rooms or you can stay in buildings up to 20 rooms. Some rooms have just one bed others have a bedroom bathroom and parlor. I think all the rooms have private bathrooms. You are staying in the historic buildings of Shaker Village. Our building had a community refrigerator in addition to a small refrigerator in our room. All the buildings have a common sitting area which is part of the history of shaker village.
We ate at the restaurant on site. Reservations are definitely recommended. The food was delicious and the atmosphere very quaint.
We did explore the grounds on our own plus, we did the guided tour of the history of music and the history of Shaker village. I would definitely recommend taking the history tour because you learned so much more through the guide and them pointing out interesting facts. The music tour was 30 minutes and the guided tour was an hour. The barn had baby goats and a very proud and beautiful Tom turkey. There is a unique type of duck at the village. You will definitely need to walk in and explore the animals.
All the staff members we encountered were very friendly and very helpful.
We arrived after dark. It was a little difficult to find the village. You cannot park in front of most of the buildings you’re staying at. There seems to be a short walks from various parking lots. Many of the buildings have a drop off zone.
The scenery was beautiful. It was very quiet. It was an awesome find. We will go back. If you’re looking for something unique to do, venture to Kentucky into the...
Read moreWe stayed here for 3 nights, so we had 2 full days to explore the village and oh my gosh did we explore! The tours were fantastic! The tour guides, like the knowledgeable Jim, are truly passionate and know their stuff. You can truly see that the people working here care for the place and put a lot of love into it. You can walk through a variety of historic houses, stumbling across artifacts that make you think "wow... these Shaker people had the right idea", they were so innovative and progressive. Truly fascinating. When staying here, they are first put us 3 into a 2 person room, which was quickly rectified and we were in a delightful bigger room (No Wi-Fi in there though, but we just went to a different building to get our internet needs). The first night I couldn't sleep as there was not much air movement, the next day they provided us with a box fan which was very much needed as it gets stuffy in those rooms. The restaurant had yummy dinner and lunch menus, the breakfast was quite bland though... just a buffet with things you find at all buffets, so that was not the best. But the spiced apple was fantastic! Wish the breakfast had a menu like lunch and dinner. Anyways, I truly loved this place. As did my dad and sister. The animals were so cute, the buildings were stunning. We went on the paddleboat tour which was interesting (though the woman narrating it wasn't the best story teller/I think just reading from a sheet). But yes I would definitely recommend this place and I love it for its genuine vibe and authenticity. I would...
Read moreShaker Village is incredibly interesting, and it's great for a day visit. However, I really REALLY cannot recommend a stay and I feel very adamant that I don't think I would ever stay again. Check-in is so late in the day that half the exhibits are closed by the time you get settled, the rooms themselves are historic but not great. We checked into our room and upon getting in, it was 75 degrees in the middle of summer and the windows cannot open. We had to get maintenance to come fix it, and while they were quick and did get some air flow going in, it didn't really cool us down despite everyone else in the house getting good air. We were told that the filter had fallen and blocked the air, but that must've been an issue and ignored by previous guests, not acknowledged by room cleaning staff, or happened in between the two hours of cleaning and check-in.
The room itself also had a very creepy closet with a chest in it that we got very bad vibes from. It felt like the moment we walked into that room we were on edge.
The restaurant isn't anything special to talk about either. The dinner menu was pretty bad and the breakfast buffet was good but service was so so.
The saving grace, and the reason this place isn't getting a 1 star from me is that it is a very genuinely cool location. There was live music the night we visited and it is incredibly beautiful. I think this is a great place to make a quick day trip to, but I wouldn't stay the...
