The cabin was small and perfect, the fire pit was small and perfect, the charcoal grill was small and perfect. The entire weekend was way too short, but was small and perfect.
Two teenage boys on the bunks, and we shared the double bed, Sleeping was incredibly acceptable. While the plastic covered "mattresses" were thin, they provided enough padding to lay on and get a decent night's sleep.
The little porch was nice to sit in the morning and sip coffee and wake up to the beauty of the mountains. The provided folding metal chairs would have been enough, but the porch was spacious enough to take our camp couch and chairs and we weren't bumping knees.
Come the evening time, the laughter and play of the other kids camping was a nice backdrop to firing up the grill and cooking our meals. The pedestal grill is simple and convenient, with solid sides to create a wind break and get good and hot. We did foil packs for meat and veg and it turned out beautifully (see picture). Then we pulled the hot coals out and used them to kick up the campfire and spent the rest of the evening around the fire enjoying being away from work and the rest of the world.
One of the biggest selling points for me, and why I will definitely be going back, was the lack of cell signal. To get any kind of reception I had to leave the campground entirely. The boys connected to the WiFi available, and I did check my email once, but to spend 3 days and not take a single phone call or get any texts- the stress relief was better than any resort massage i have ever had.
Bring your food, bring your drinks, bring a comfy chair, and relax in the mountain aire without being bothered. I feel like a...
Read moreHave stayed twice and love this low key mountain campground. Nothing special or perfect but just works. Gorgeous scenery and friendly folk up on Harmony Mountain. Kids loved the pool, mini golf, goats to pet and games on our first visit over the summer of 2021. The fall didn't disappoint on our most recent second visit in October 2022. Wonderful golden hour sunrises and sunsets over the valley below and mountains above. Stayed 4 nights and commuted to App State in Boone for work this time, about 15 minutes away. Definitely could be longer if there is traffic and there often is. A nice Lowes Foods is at the intersection of 194 and 421. Boone is a legendary college town with many places to eat and drink, breweries, live music and other performances, arts, hiking everywhere, access to the Blue Ridge Parkway and generally good friendly folk. Gets a bit crowded during peak tourist season so plan ahead! The park has wifi but we found it to be un-usable so plan ahead. We got some weak Verizon signal for our phones - occassionally none - and our T-Mobile hotspot didn't get a signal. Not atypical for these parts as cellular and mountains don't always play nicely together. Finally, bring your leveling gear and skills! It is the mountains so while the sites are fairly level, they all sit on steps down the side of a hill so throughout the season the gravel sites will inevitability wash out a bit toward the downslope. Don't get mad,...
Read moreWe decided on a mid-week getaway. Tuesday through Friday. We chose Boone KOA because it was out in the boonies but close to attractions. Only about 10 minutes from downtown Boone and 15 minutes from Blowing Rock. This is a quite, secluded campground that is really well kept. The camp sites are tight but no big problem. We are used to camping in city, state, and national forest campgrounds where the sites are really big. But the smaller sites didn't bother us. The staff was great. They were a very friendly group of people. We took our dog, Coco, with us and the ladies in the camp store loved her. They had treats for her and they were instant friends. We will definitely be visiting this campground again. The only drawbacks to it are the roads getting there. Highway 421 from Wilkesboro to Boone is a steep and curvy 4 lane road. There is a 1600 foot climb (8% grade) over about 3 or 4 miles. We were down to 15 and 20 mph a couple of times pulling a Fleetwood Utah popup with our 4x4 Chevy Blazer. Highway 194 has some steep curvy spots as well as Ray Brown road. Both of these are 2 lane roads. But once you are there, it's worth all the trouble. Well kept grounds and facilities. Exceptionally clean! A fenced in area for you to throw a ball for your dog. Nice swimming pool (even though we never got in). And for the techies, there was WIFI! Boone KOA will be on our list of campgrounds to...
