Great place to camp while backpacking. Lots of flat spots for tents, several fire pits, a nearby spring for filling up waters bottles (it’s clear but filtering recommended), and an outhouse. (The outhouse was not very clean when we visited.) There’s even a small shelter that looks like it could be helpful if the weather is poor. We found some wild raspberries which were a nice treat as well. Plenty of trees at a good distance for hammocks as well.
Update 8/2023: Camped here again 2 years later. The old sites we camped at before are closed off for restoration. The structure that I mentioned which appeared to be some sort of shelter is the new smoldering privy which is very nice and has a door. To the right of the privy is a new section of numbered camp sites, with posts marking the path to get to each site (I added an example photo of a marker post with the site on the distance and a site with tent set up for reference). Above the individual sites are two group sites. I also added a picture of the map they provided of the layout including fire pits, camp sites and trails connecting them. There’s a bear pole near the privy. Very comfortable stay again. Water source still just as active as 2 years ago and this was the freshest and coolest water we found on our section hike of the Maryland...
Read morenice privy, bear pole, lots of campsites... people have put a lot of work into this place, it shows... I don't know who has been working/maintaining here but the whole area is on a hill and they have dug (mostly) flat campsites right into the side of the hill.. lots of chairs / seats and fire pits made out of rock. it's pretty impressive. most of the sites up the hill from the privy are a little rocky so be sure to have a footprint for your tent and a good sleeping pad. there is also a bunch more sites down closer to the AT. but I didn't check those out because a group of boy scouts were set up in that area. headed nobo, the rocky blue blaze trail on your right, before you get to the pogo sign, will lead you up to the newer campsites and then back down to the privy and the older campsites. or you can just stay on the AT till you get to...
Read moreI was here this past weekend. There's a relatively new bear pole about 20 ft from a new privy that is not quite yet completed. On my way South the next morning, I came across the ranger who's worked on the campground. He told me they were putting in a new campground area and new path right next to the existing campground. Once completed, the old campground will be restored as it has been overused.
It was my second time there, and it's a good campground, but it can be tough to find level spots. Hopefully, the new campground is a bit flatter. The volunteers do wonderful work! Appreciate them if you...
