A Gentleman’s Account of Glendorn, Bradford, Pennsylvania

I first made my way to Glendorn at the encouragement of my Vistage compatriots, whose praises of this secluded haven stirred my imagination to no end. Eager for the experience, I arrived a full day ahead of schedule, intent on soaking in every element of the place.

From the very moment I passed through the great gates and began the four-minute drive across the vast grounds, I knew I had entered another world. The winding approach unfolded like a prologue to a grand novel: manicured trails, towering timber, and the suggestion that one was returning to an era when oil barons reigned, and families gathered at their estates as though they were kingdoms unto themselves. When I arrived at the main lodge, I was greeted carside by a staff member with umbrella in hand and champagne at the ready—a gesture befitting royalty. Inside, Megan, whose attentiveness never once faltered, ushered me into the story of Glendorn. She spoke of the land, the lodges, and the amenities with such knowledge and grace that I felt less like a guest and more like a welcomed confidant.

That very afternoon, we took to the shooting grounds under the guidance of Charles, an instructor of remarkable patience and skill. For those unacquainted with firearms, his counsel was indispensable; for the seasoned hand, his knowledge elevated the experience. To shoot with DT-12s—of such fine make and balance—was itself a privilege, though I did note that one could bring their own piece should they wish. The facilities themselves, from the remote throwers to the skeet and trap houses, left no detail unattended.

From there, we hiked to Robber’s Pond, where fly fishing amidst the still waters provided a communion with nature both serene and exhilarating. The rains of the prior day had summoned insects in abundance, and the fish rose eagerly. The pond, manicured with perfection, allowed one to cast from any vantage without hindrance, and the reward of many rising fish made the effort pure delight.

Meals, I must say, surpassed even the loftiest of expectations. Dish upon dish emerged as if composed by an artist, each one drawing forth the essence of the freshest provisions. It was not mere sustenance but true dining—an experience equal to the grandeur of the grounds.

When my wife joined me on Friday, we moved from John’s Cabin to another dwelling, each cabin itself a time capsule of architecture and taste. Constructed between the 1920s and 1960s, each seemed to embody the pinnacle of design from its respective decade. To dwell in them is to step back into history without ever sacrificing comfort or refinement.

The history of Glendorn itself is a marvel: raised during the Great Depression by the Dorn family in 1929, held within their stewardship for generations, and opened to the public only in 1995. The sheer size of the estate—over 1,500 acres—astonishes. One quickly realizes the vast effort required to maintain such splendor, from the miles of manicured trails and warming huts to the evidence of heavy machinery that keeps the grounds impeccable.

The days passed swiftly, too swiftly. Between the saunas, the endless trails, the artfully prepared meals, and the sheer romance of the place, I found myself reluctant to depart. Indeed, my wife all but had to drag me away.

Glendorn is not simply a destination; it is an encounter with history, nature, and artistry intertwined. To stay here is to step into another age, to taste the grandeur of a bygone era, and to etch into memory an experience that cannot be replicated elsewhere. I left not merely refreshed but transformed, and I await my return with great...

I felt the need to share our wonderful experience this past weekend. The 4 of us were looking for a 2-night getaway within a 3-hour radius. The Glendorn was recommended so we booked. We had no idea that we would receive the attention and care bestowed as soon as we booked. Megan called us before our arrival to inquire about what activities we were interested in, and any food preferences/allergies. When we arrived we were welcomed warmly, our itinerary was reviewed including our meal time for dinner and the activities we booked. We were given a brief tour of the main lodge and the history of the Glendorn. We were then escorted to our cottage and given an overview of the amenities. We found our cottage fully stocked with water, soft drinks the infamous "Glendorn chocolate chip cookies, a delicious cheese and cracker plate, fresh flowers, a full stockpile of dry logs for the fireplace, and anything one would need as far as toiletries go. Once we settled in, we were asked to arrive 30 minutes before dinner to find a staff member at the door to welcome us, take our coats, and escort us to a beautiful gathering room for complimentary appetizers and cocktails. We were then escorted to the dining room where we received the BEST service any of us have ever experienced. We elected to order the 4-course meal prepared by their chef and were not disappointed. For breakfast every day we had the option to eat at the lodge or have breakfast delivered to our cottage, what..... we could not believe this! The following morning we awoke to our breakfast delivery, two gentlemen delivered more wood and shoveled and cleared our vehicle of snow from the night before. As you can see I am thoroughly impressed! This resort is a GEM and I highly recommend it. We look forward...

Growing up in Pennsylvania, I have fond memories of camping trips to central PA to tent among the towering hemlocks, hiking through trails full of mosses and ferns and fishing in the many mountain streams. I was hoping to find that experience again at Glendorn. It is just like the Pennsylvania woods of my youth. Cabins and hiking trails and ponds/streams. The cabins are far beyond the primitive ones of my youth. They are decorated with upscale rustic furniture, antiques, fabulous bed linens and all modern conveniences. The family that enjoyed Glendorn since the 1920s, have passed it on complete with original touches. The new owner has been true to the original feeling of enjoying family time in the woods of Pennsylvania, but with the luxury of wonderful food, and the most welcoming, accommodating staff you could ask for. The towering Hemlocks, and Eastern Pine are not easy to find anymore, but they are here to experience in a relaxing, quiet location. Activities like tennis, boating, biking, sporting clays and a beautiful pool and spa provide whatever diversions you could want. Breakfast in the beautiful dining room, or delivered to your cabin tucked in the woods. Lunches packed for your daily excursions. Cocktails and canapés before dinner by the huge stone fireplace. Experience the wonder of Pennsylvania of a hundred years ago, but with luxury that a Relais and Chateaux property provides. Food and service could compete for Michelin recognition. A birder's paradise. Make sure to use the sauna, tucked in the...

Our visit at the Glendorn was phenomenal. Everything was perfect and we couldn’t have asked for a better vacation. Upon our arrival, we already knew this place was special with how fantastic the staff was. The service here was rivaled by no one. The activities were endless. We spent our few days here shooting, fishing, hiking, horse back riding, swimming, and spa. Everything was really fun and the staff helped us learn it all. We had no idea what we were doing at first. But with their guidance we were pros in no time :) The meals we had were five star meals as well. The chef did an amazing job. We also had our meals in different settings. That really added to our stay. We came here as a group but will definitely come back. If you are looking for a relaxing relaxing vacation in the forest, then look no further than this picturesque spot.

Beautiful site for an adventurous honeymoon weekend. Friendly and warm staff. More to do than you can fit in a weekend. Difficult season; summer and winter are the times to be here. Award winning fly fishing. Skeet and trap shooting, hunting, hiking, biking, watersports, snowmobiling, etc. Wonderful food. Great private cabins fully equipped. We stayed at The Dale, with 2 fireplaces, a kitchenette and a sunroom. Older bathroom could use updating. Beware of fees everywhere. Extra for ALL alcohol, most activites that require a guide and lunch/dinner. And these fees aren't readily available either. Ask before you purchase. (ie- dinner was $105pp for 4 courses of the size that leaves you hungry afterwards) Enjoyed our time, just be preparded to bring the CC.
