This will not be a 5 star campground for everyone, but it was for our family. We stayed in our 18 ft hybrid camper that has 3 fold out beds, in an electric only site on the north end of the campground.
Let me first state why some people will not find it 5 stars, then if you stay with me you will find out why we loved it.
The bathrooms suck. I mean the facility on the north end of the campground was closed, but they did have porta-potties, which helped until they ran out of toilet paper. The bathrooms that did work were 200 yards from out campsite, so we got our workout in when we had to shower. They had working faucets with good hot water, but they were in serious need of repair. There are holes in the walls of the shower, not to the outside, but to the interior of the wall to get access to the plumbing. One of the faucets in the men's restroom was loose, and I think one in the women's did not work. They were generally kept clean and stocked with paper products, but because of some of the showers facilites were not done, there was lots of water on the floor in the men's side.
Also, there were lots of mosquitos, but I did not mind that too much except at night when we were having a fire.
Also, there were not enough fire rings and picnic tables to go around to every site but the staff worked hard to move them around to get them to people who wanted them.
Now having said that, how could I rate it 5 stars? Well, for us it was wonderful, because we had a very spacious electric site (A9) right on the north end right on Lower Saint Mary's Lake. Furthermore, probably because we were so far from the working bathrooms, we did not have many people on our side of the campground, so we basically had a very private site for 5 nights. We were able to go right down to the lake and fish and even swim (bring water shoes because it is rocky and then muddy.) The loons were out and we also rented a canoe for a very reasonable price for a whole afternoon. We got some great views of the lake with the canoe.
The staff was always very friendly and helpful, and the best part is they left us alone unless we asked for help.
The common area did have some internet. It was slow, but being disconnected actually added to our vacation. We sat around and read, played in the water, played frisbee, and played board games.
The location is great if you want to go to Many Glaciers or if you just want to hang out. It is also not far from the St. Mary's. It is an open field, but all around are mountains and hills. Also, we like to harvest our own firewood, and we found lots of dried fallen trees in the woods on the east side of the campground.
The price was very reasonable for the area, and since I had read other reviews I knew to expect the fee to dump as we left.
Not only would I come back here, but it is likely I would not even try to find...
Read moreWhen looking for a place to camp near Glacier, it was hard to find something. If you are going to the park, this is the ideal side to stay on in my opinion. Close to Many Glacier and close to St Mary's entrance. (We actually stayed on both sides.) I was nervous to camp here because of some reviews. I loved this place. No one bothered us. We were at the park most of the day and only at the campground in the evening. We stayed with a 30 ft travel trailer. At first, I thought we would only be able to get electric hookup and would need to fill with water and dump when we left ($10 dump fee). However, after checking in and driving to our site, I saw all of the RVs we came to were full hook-ups. I went back to the office to see if we could switch sites. We were initially at B17 (close to the lake, 30 amp, and water nearby to fill). However, she said B10 was available for 2 nights so we could stay there 2 of our 3 nights and then move. B10 was full hook-up with 50, 30, and 20 amp at the box. It was on the corner of the row so we weren't sandwiched in on both sides. We had a good amount of space to our site. The ladies who work in the office were very kind and helpful. When I went back to see where we could stay our 3rd night, B10 was now available so we didn't need to move! There is 1 shower house on the campground side because the other is under construction. I cannot speak to the cleanliness or quality of the shower house because we didn't use it. I did see workers at the shower house though a few different times so I imagine they were cleaning or taking care of any problems. Also, when we were setting up, the male workers drove around to see if we needed anything at our site (picnic table or fire ring). They also took our garbage bag when we were walking it to the dumpster. There is a black bear living in the wooded area of the campground. My dad saw it in the woods on the day-use side when walking in the evening, and it ran when it saw or heard him. Just don't leave food out and you should be fine with the bear. The one worker said the game commission was going to try to move it though. I would stay here again the next time I go to Glacier. They also have a little store with some food and camping things. Also, they have a laundry facility in the office. I did read this on another review so I asked: because it is an Indian Reservation, you need a recreational permit to do most things here such as, swimming, boating, hiking, biking. Be sure to look into that before engaging in any activity or touching the water in St Mary Lake at the campground. You will be fined if you cannot show your permit while engaging in...
Read moreWe were originally booked in July, but due to a medical emergency we had to cancel that reservation with about a weeks notice. I asked if we could rebook for the end of August and frankly didn't expect it to happen. But the staff was GREAT to work with. They immediately rebooked the dates for us and were happy to help.||We arrived in our motorhome towing our touring motorcycle. The resort area is a very large open field. We were able to find our spot easily, and we were impressed with how large the camp area was for each unit. Our site had power, water, and sewer hookups. All of them were working. The hookups are a bit closer to the road, hence the front of the vehicle, which is a little odd. But I was able to reach with 20 feet of hose and cable (barely!). Spaces are fairly level, but there are some drops and ridges. In our case the front wheels were well up in the air, but we had a level home. The site equipment (table) was in excellent condition.||You can't beat the location. We were a short drive from either the Many Glaciers entrance (day hikes and horseback riding) or the St. Mary entrance (Going to the Sun road). ||What impressed me most about the location was the staff. They were constantly picking up garbage, even stopping by our campsite to ask us if we had anything to throw away. They cleaned the portable bathrooms a couple of times each day (at least). I was buying ice in the office one day and it just so happened that the credit card machine wasn't working. I thought they were going to make me walk all the way back to camp to get cash, but instead they just asked me to stop by the next time I was passing by the office and settle up with them. I was really, really impressed with all of the extra effort staff put in.||I can't comment on the bathrooms because, of course, we use our motorhome. I did notice that at least one of the buildings was closed but I'm not sure why.||Would I stay here again? Yes, in a heartbeat, and mainly because...
