This is a nice campground for proximity to ATL and Lanier. The restrooms were clean and front office folks were nice. Generally, we value privacy over direct water access, so we chose a large, well-shaded site (site 002) rather than one on the crowded waterfront loops in the boiling sun. In fact, after walking the campground, we felt this was THE most private site, especially when down at the picnic area. We liked that a lot!
At site 002, be aware that your trailer sits up above the picnic area, but there is a nice cement walkway from your trailer area down to the spacious area for chairs, firepit, grilling, etc. I like that even when it rained, the walkway was not muddy. Made it better for us since we have pups. There was a family of deer right next to us, as well, so that was really fun to watch.
The ranger was on point, as well, which was great. It is a busy campground and, with its proximity to Atlanta, makes for an easy weekend getaway, which is what we did. The downside of that are people doing all sorts of crazy things both on land and on the lake. We didn't care as long as they stayed out of our site, but know that if you are after solitude, peace and quiet, this might not be the place for you. If you are after a very nice campground without a big journey, it fits the bill and we will definitely return.
I didn't give it 5 stars because of the following:
Nonetheless, it is close to the husband's work for such nice camping (about 45 minutes up I85) and the lake is lovely. We...
Read moreFirst, the campground is amazing. Very clean, and a lot of really nice sites along the lake.
I'm giving it a low rating because it's definitely worth mentioning that our experience with one of the campground hosts was less than desirable. This is a "Federal" park, managed by the Army Corp of Engineers, so there are very strict rules in place. And probably for good reason. In fact, we intentionally picked this campground to be away from the party atmosphere as I had my 3 kids and the grandparents with me. I am a scoutmaster, and well aware of Leave No Trace, campground etiquette, etc.
I had a couple minor issues where the grandparents had to cancel the overnight stay, and wished to just visit for the afternoon. The host was really awful to us about it, and accused us of trying to use the campground as a day use only spot. I also moved my car for 5 minutes to an empty campsite so that I could fill up a heavy water container at a water spigot and drop off lunch to my children at a beachy area. The same ranger happened to drive by and gave me a massive earful. I tried to explain I understood the rule and had no intention of taking someone else's campsite for more than a few minutes, and he refused to listen.
Regardless... if you're going to camp here... Be aware the hosts are militant, cranky, short tempered, and need customer service training. Don't do anything that might get them upset, and you'll have...
Read moreActually deserves 5 stars except it is always so full.Everyone knows it is the best park in the area ,this season, for a couple of reasons,so everyone is there. It is very well maintained despite the crowds that keep it full.Clean bathrooms always have paper'good light in parking lots,no trash scattered around. And the water is also clean, you can see the bottom in most places. There is a roped sandy beach and shallow swim area for chilren with a level sandy bottom.Picnic tables are scattered throughout the park in semi private shaded naturaly wooded pathways leading to more areas to swim or fish.Large boulders warmed in the sun make a great place to stretch out and relax ,maybe put up a hammock. The water is beautiful clear and green all the way down to pretty rocks in small coves. The people are usually a good mixed group of youth and family I haven't any sketchy people there.Wear a hat and take ant spray and bug stuff, mostly army ants, they are annoying but harmless.Weekdays are great during the day is perfect for tanning and swimming, the evenings are good for a easy hike and...
