We had 3 meals at the hotel. (we were staying at an RV park near by. Heard from guests that the hotel rooms are very nice) The Hotel got new managers in early July 2023. They are TERRIFIC ! Conlan & Mary are very nice and SO friendly. The dining is at Family style, large tables, so you might get to visit with some interesting people over your meal. Breakfast has a simple menu, with something to suit your taste. The scrambled eggs were so fluffy and good ! Reservations for Dinner are requested, simply so that the cook, Conlan, knows how much food to prepare for the evening. Dinner is Cook's choice each evening. You get what you get...... but it is going to be excellent. Our night, he made pulled pork (that was perfectly cooked) with a sauce made from Peaches & carmelized onions. It was out of this world ! Had a lovely Kale salad, herbed Texas toast, beverage and for desert an awesome Mint chocolate chip blondie brownie. If you are in the area, please stop in for a meal. You won't be disappointed. The mercantile next door is also...

This is a unique and remote experience. Amenities are typical to an early 20th century hotel in a rural location. No TV, no pool, small rooms, bath down the hall, historic. Perfect! Having stayed at this historic hotel twice over the past 17 years the consistency has remained. Family style dinners. Good quality but not fancy meals. Again, perfect! Pets not allowed in the hotel however there are 4 rooms in the "Drover's" unit that are available if you bring your pooch. Only criticism would be I feel the staff should share a brief introduction about the hotel during the family dinner event each evening. Adventure in the Steens mountain and a highly recommended trip through the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge. Stop by the headquarters. Must visit Frenchglen and area at least once for a very unique experience. September perfect to avoid bugs otherwise do a bit of research to coordinate your visit with the migrating birds in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Visited two nights 23-24...

Beautiful Drive into this step back in Time... We stayed for 2 nights at the Frenchglen Hotel and Drover Inn and the Staff was wonderful and courteous and our accommodations were very comfortable and clean BUT... The meals were served family style each evening at the cost of $25.00/ea which IF plated with 4-5 star quality would have been fine, BUT... That was NOT the case... First night POT ROAST so tough it took a knife to cut and no amount of chewing would soften the meat and a dessert that must have been left on the stove for hours to harden the cake... Second Night RICE/CHICKEN RICE PILAF slopped into a serving bowl with little chicken and broccoli and a peanut butter dessert that still leaves an impression to this day... Suggestion is hire a REAL COOK or at least charge a different price that reflects the cost and quality of the meals served... The rest of the Trip was wonderful and the fishing was off the scale at Fish Lake and the Fresh Plumbs off the Tree at the hotel were...

As the migrating flocks of birds move through the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, we happily discovered that the Frenchglen Hotel is again open providing the unique hospitality of one of Oregon's backroad gems adjacent to this world class wildlife refuge. There is a new lessor providing homestyle meals and lodging in this historic lodge owned and overseen as an Oregon State Park. We've had a lunch and dinner there in between birding adventure tours and enjoyed every minute of the experiences. We're a long ways from Portland, but as we enjoyed our dinner last night with other "off the beaten" path adventurers, we discovered a bunch of interconnection with another Oregon couple exploring this remarkable place. The Frenchglen Hotel is back and ready to welcome you to Steens Mountain country and the wildlife refuge. Beware that gasoline might be in short supply in the off season - fill up in Burns or at the Narrows Campground just in case!

A fine establishment though rather minimalist, something to be expected and even desired whilst exploring this wondrous area of wildlife refuge, historic ranches, and the road loop up, through, and down the amazing Steens Mountain fault-block mountain. All is set in some of the cleanest, most isolated areas remaining in the country. Real people here. Go with the flow and one will do well and enjoy their stay at the Frenchglen Hotel. Don't be afraid to ask good questions, like "How long is breakfast served in the mornings?" It's a breakfast worth not missing as well as an opportunity for fellow-shipping with some genuine real folks. My photos are from the community (yes, the phone works!) and the nearby area.
