I love this campground. Its first come first serve. I would get there anytime from 8a to 10a. Drive around and check everyones yellow envelope. It will say how long they are staying. They have to be out by 12. Its 7 dollars a night. Theres a tent pad, a fire pit with a grill rack, food post, picnic table, and bathrooms across the camp. Theres 12 sites to my knowledge. I would recommend staying at the lower camp. It's right on the shore. Theres a river that comes out onto the beach which is awesome. It feels rustic camping there but also has a few amenities to camp with kiddos. Last year we went in august and could see the meteor shower. We didnt see any this year in july. The hosts are very attentive to the site. Last year our host told us stories and I liked that. This year our host was a bit more reserved. This place is definitely a gem...

Disclaimer: we didn't actually camp here, though it seemed like a nice, quiet place to go for that. We parked nearby and took the trail out to the Au Sable Light Station, and spent a little time where the Hurricane River flows into Superior, as well.

We saw people parked in the lot right off H-58, and assumed that was the place to go. There's actually another lot closer to the campground that would've saved us a handful of steps. The trail out to the Light Station is wide enough for a car and covered with chipped rocks, and also fairly flat; even though it's about 1.5 miles from the campground to the Station, it's not an awful walk.

The river also seemed like an enjoyable place for kids to play...

We enjoyed the upper campground. Quite area and friendly rangers. The upper campgrounds do get COLD at night due to the wind from the lake. A lot of walking trails and the beach is less than a mile away.

Campground is about 45 min drive to Pictured Rocks & downtown area. No cell service on the upper campground so plan to buy tickets and book experiences before you arrive.

Buy firewood before you get into the park. You have to drive back out of the park or into Pictured Rocks area to get wood for $15.

No rangers in the park asked us to show proof of park entry, but they did check our...

One of my favorite camp grounds! The sites are spaced out pretty well so you get some privacy from other campers. The Upper sites are a bit more of a trek down to the beach/trail, but it still is pretty close! The lower sites you may have more travelers passing by due to backpackers but I've never been bothered by them/it. Lots of trails to explore, the beach is nice, the quiet hours are reasonable. The toilets aren't bad but please remember to close the lid when not in use! Helps the smells. Only downside is the flies that get in there.
