Terrible night’s sleep due to A/C problems (systemic?) and random alarm going off.
After a long day’s drive, I check-into the hotel with my wife and two little girls around 9pm. We go right to bed. At midnight the alarm clock unexpectedly starts blaring. So I fumble with it in the dark for a minute and get it to turn off. Frustrating, but maybe an understandable one-off.
At 1am, our second floor room is getting unbearably hot (78 F) so I hobble over in the dark to the A/C unit by the window. There’s no controls on it - it says “controlled by thermostat on wall”. So I go over to the thermostat, which is dead. (Another daily inspection lapse?) I fumble in the dark to get the cover off the thermostat to see if I can replace the batteries. After a minute of struggling, I grab my keys and finally manage to pop the cover off. There’s no batteries at all! I groggily head down to the front desk, in my pajamas, and they hand me some batteries for it (‘we found these loose batteries in the back room, we’re not sure if these will work, but we hope so!’). I head back to the room, fumbling in the dark for a minute to put the batteries in and replace the cover. Finally I get them in, and the thermostat powers on, but the A/C unit itself still won’t turn on. I unplug / reply the A/C unit. No use, still doesn’t work 😫 I head back downstairs and they offer to move me and my family to another room. Well I really don’t want to move my kids and our stuff into another room since it’s 2am. But maybe if we do the adjacent room, that could work? They give me the room key to the adjacent room. I head on in. Guess what? The thermostat on the wall in this room is dead too! I pop the cover off - no batteries in this one either! At this point it’s starting to feel less like a coincidence and more like some kinda scheme to save on HVAC costs (e.g. let’s keep the thermostat de-powered generally unless a guest bothers to ask for batteries. Haha 🙃) So I let the front desk know, and they send someone up to put in batteries. They put them in and the thermostat lights up… but the unit still doesn’t power on. They offer me a room fan? Sure😔 So, resigned to a night of miserable sleep at 78F, I head back to my room. By 3am, I’m still not sleeping, so I decide to pen this review instead (might as well.)
Update: I talked to the manager in the morning about my experience. While apologetic, he said he can’t offer any refund or anything since I booked through a third party (I went through Expedia, which offered a cheaper price than the hotel quoted me when I called on the phone.)
On the plus side, their breakfast was pretty good and their front desk staff tried to be as helpful as she be could at 2am.
The real failure is not having a functioning thermostat/ A/C (with no batteries in the panel in at least two rooms.)
Before booking here, look for a comment here from management that says something like “we have added an item to our standard room-preparation checklist to glance at the thermostat, make sure it has power, and verify the room is set to a standard temperature.” And when checking into their room, verify your thermostat A/C is working before settling into the room...
Read moreThe hotel was clean & the one housekeeping person I spoke with was polite and helpful. Breakfast was decent & the elderly lady who was handling that was very efficient, and quick to clean up spills and keep things orderly and clean. The price wasn't too bad. However,There was ONE front desk employee... a true "negative Nancy"... who came in for her shift in the morning, who would do well to keep her opinions to herself. She was critical of everything, from what she considered unnecessary patriotic decor at the hotel to what guests were doing. My husband had a cup of coffee sitting on the end table by the sofa, and she made a snarky comment about how you're not supposed to have food there and that was rude. It was just a cup of coffee with a cover on it, and there was no sign saying you couldn't sit there with a cup of coffee. If that was really a problem, she could have found a nice way to quietly whisper it to him, rather than make a pronouncement.
The hotel was filled with D3 College Club baseball teams and their families, who were there as participants in the World Series being held in Butler that weekend. She came in from outside, and loudly said, "It's summertime out there. Why anyone would want to sit at a baseball game, I don't know. It's summertime people." Did she forget that, if we weren't there to sit at baseball games all weekend, watching our sons and grandsons and nephews play, that none of us would be staying there, the hotel would be empty, and she wouldn't have a job??? If she can't find something good to say, she shouldn't say...
Read moreBooked this room for a weekend stay for a local area wedding. Hotel looked much better than hotel that the wedding party had booked, so we opted to stay here instead. Staff was very attentive and accommodating.
However, we booked the king room with hot tub (because standard kings were not available) and had some issues. I found the shower/toilet area very crammed. It was difficult to get in and out of bathroom due to door placement in the tight quarters. Also, our toilet ran endlessly. We notified the staff about the toilet and maintenance came and 'fixed it.' Unfortunately, the fix did not work and instead we could no longer flush the toilet without removing the back lid. Maintenance came back to fix the flushing issue and informed us that they did not have the proper part to fix the toilet's nonstop running.
They advised to keep the bathroom door closed so we wouldn't have to hear the constant running while sleeping and in the room. This typically would not have been an issue, but the bathroom door stuck and required a lot of muscle to close completely to block out the sound. The sound of opening/closing the door completely sounded more like a slam and inadvertently woke up our infant in the middle of the night. So we had to learn to live with the nonstop sound during our stay.
But the staff was very apologetic about the situation, and we did not hold that against them. The bed in the room was very comfortable and room amenities came in handy (nice size mini frig...
