Whether you’re an accomplished, low-handicap golfer or are just new to the game, Springdale is a course that can be enjoyed by anyone. It’s located at the base of Cold Mountain and is a golf resort that combines the extraordinary beauty of the awe-inspiring natural landscape with the hospitality and simple comforts you’d expect at a golf resort.
The course itself is a one-of-a-kind golf experience, with rolling, mountainous terrain, hidden hazards, and plush greens. It’s one of the best-maintained courses in the area, as the members will attest to. There are a few blind shots out here. One significant blind shot is on the third hole. It’s a par 3 that plays slightly uphill, and you can’t see the hole from the tee box. You can see the pin, so pay attention to the GPS on the cart for further details.
Number 4 is a risk-reward par 4 that plays downhill and is shorter than the 336 yards stated on the scorecard. Longball hitters may be tempted to go for the green off the tee but beware of the pond in front on the left side as well as the two bunkers by the green. Your best bet is to hit something less than a driver off the tee, leave a manageable approach distance, and make birdie that way.
As you play the first few holes, you may be saying to yourself, “I thought this was a mountain golf course.” So far, it’s been relatively flat with a few exceptions such as the tee shot on three and a couple of elevated tee boxes. Number 6 is the first hole where you start to see some major elevation changes. It’s a XXX-yard dogleg left par 4 that plays slightly uphill, maybe half club to club longer. The green is influenced by the mountain and what you think may be an uphill putt that breaks right is exactly the opposite.
The front nine finishes with a 454-yard par 5, dogleg left. If you can catch the downhill slope on the left side, not only have you crushed your drive, but you’ll leave yourself in a good position for the next shot and an opportunity to go for the green. A good drive could leave you inside the 200-yard marker with an approach shot that plays slightly downhill into a green protected on the right side by a bunker. Beware of the creek that crosses about 50 yards in front of the green.
The 13th hole is called The Spasm; it’s Springdale’s signature hole and comes with a warning that it may be hazardous to your mental health. From the White Tees The Spasm plays 422 yards; move up to the Golds and it becomes a 335-yard hole. Not only will you save 87 yards, but you may also preserve some of that mental health you were warned about! Trees line the right side of this challenging par 4 that doglegs to the right and to complicate matters there’s a creek that runs down the right side as well. Hit your tee shot over the bunker at the corner of the dogleg and you’ll still have a long approach shot into a slightly elevated green with more sand on the right. Anything left may find a downhill slope and leave a tough up and down.
The Spasm is followed up by another 400-yard par 4 and requires an accurate tee shot between two giant oak trees. A good drive to the top of the hill will leave a manageable approach shot into a green fronted on either side by sand. If you can somehow catch the downslope, not only will you make your second shot considerably shorter, but you may also hit the longest drive of your life!
The 16th hole is a 449-yard par 4 that should be called Son or Spasm (or Father of Spasm, depending upon how you look at it.) It does play downhill so you’ve got that going for you! Trees line the right side, and there’s a fairway bunker on the right. Your approach shot plays downhill into a green that slopes back left to front right. Just to add a little intrigue to this long par 4, that creek you’ve encountered a few times crosses the fairway just in front...
Read moreFirst of all, I've been coming to this course for about a dozen years, and never had nothing but a wonderful time with a wonderful staff over the years. The course is great, challenging and super fun. However, one of the staff, whom I never ran into in passed years, this little old man Randy, is a complete maniac! I was out there today for a round with my wife, and this crazy man literally chased us off the course! No joke! Here's what happened... I paid the green fee for 18 holes with a cart and asked in the pro-shop if it was okay if we walked the first 9 holes to get some exercise after which we'd ride for the back 9. Mind you, I paid the full 18+cart fee, so who gives a sh&$ if we wanted to walk. The lady in the pro-shop said, "talk to Terry to make sure he's good w/ it because I'm new here, so not sure if you can walk or not". Note, it was 3:15PM and with about a total of 4 groups out on the entire course, pace of play was not an issue at all.
Anyhow, my wife and I went to the first tee and looked for this "Terry", but he was nowhere to be found, so I teed off... (only I was golfing, my wife was just there for the views/nature and to keep my company). Then when we were in the 4th fairway, all of a sudden, this pissed off little old guy that looks like that Yosemite Sam Looney Toons cartoon character with anger management issues rolls up on us.. The first words out of his mouth were that that we needed to leave the golf course immediately... This dude turned out to be the all-powerful Randy the starter. I was like "for whaaaaaaaaat?!?!" He then proceeded to tell us that we're not allowed to walk the course, and since we violated that rule, which was unknown to us, we must leave the course right away. First of all, noone told us we were not allowed to walk. Second, I paid for a cart fee and was not holding anyone up; so what the F does it matter?! Third, I would have been happy to take a cart if someone had told us that this maniac, Randy, was going to get his panties in a bunch over anyone daring to walk the course.
Then came the most unbelievable part of this drama... This crazy man ended up telling us that "we better leave while we can". He basically, threatened to harm us over walking the course! We're assuming that he had a gun in the pro-shop, which I'm guessing he was prepared to pull on me. And all this for walking the golf course!
Long story short, this is a great course with good layout and awesome views. But unfortunately there is this messed-up-in-the-head, full of anger, little starter dude whose sole purpose in life seems to be to terrorize golfers at Springdale CC! Do not go here unless you want to put up with this redneck guy's terrible attitude...

Then it was just beginning to become the vision of the new owners. Today, it is impressive! Now the Rocky Face Tavern, Guest Registration and Check-in building, and the Pro Shop/Fitness Center create welcoming venue around the central Event Lawn. Each building is very impressive. The Pro Shop offers a variety of golf attire, the fitness center is spacious with great equipment, the outdoor pool is relaxing and The Rocky Face Tavern has a bar, indoor seating and outdoor seating. On the Event Lawn are fun games for entertainment. The Golf Course is in very good shape and creates a most enjoyable round of golf with plenty of challenges as it winds through a valley, as well as, up and down hillsides. A fun course to play with a lot of scenic views of the surrounding mountains including Cold Mountain, well known for the book Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. For us it is truly an exciting day of golf as we take on the Springdale Course.
2021 Review Golfers Will Enjoy Playing Springdale. It had been many years since we played Springdale Golf Course at Cold Mountain. On this visit to the Maggie Valley area, we learned that Springdale was under new ownership and the golf course had been updated, making it a must play on this getaway. The new owners tackled getting the course in shape first and are now in the process of construction for a new club house, tavern, pro shop, fitness center, pools and more. Springdale is going to be an impressive golf resort and more once the renovations and updates are completed. With renovations underway the Pro Shop is currently just a check-in building. They have a nice driving range. Playing the course we learn that the former back nine and front nine are reversed. Actually this is good as now the front nine is more valley style course giving a chance to acclimate to the course before tackling the challenging mountain and hill terrain of the back nine. We thoroughly enjoyed the golf course finding it definitely presented plenty of challenging but also enjoyable to play. Creeks and ponds come into play on some holes so be sure to check the card with the hole layout as often creeks cutting across a fairway or ponds are not visible. The course is overall in good condition and offers sets of tees to fit golfers of all levels. In addition to a really good course, take a few minutes to admire the scenery of the...
