For what my husband I needed, the Sun N' Sand fit the bill! Sometimes it's confusing giving Google reviews because a five star rating is what one would usually give to the Ritz or something, so since it was perfect for what we needed, it got the five stars, but this is not the Ritz! As you'll read below, it was perfectly comfortable, the staff was helpful and responsive and the room was bright and clean. For the price off-season, it was perfect for travelers on a budget, but if you're looking for five star amenities, this isn't your place which is why it's not five stars down the line! The location is slightly out of town, but I can see for a family staying in summertime this would be the prefect place. Also it would be a great place for a family reunion or casual wedding or party on their outdoor grounds. My husband and I biked RT on the Kal Haven trail from Kalamzoo (33 miles each way). Staying in town in South Haven would have been ideal, but even in the off-season it was pricey for our budget so we stayed at the Sun N Sand Resort which was an 8-10 minute ride to town. Doesn’t sound like much until you arrive close to dark on bikes and realize it’s a bike ride in the dark to town to get food on a two lane (albeit not busy) road. We panicked a little, but the front desk had some cold alcoholic beverages we could buy and we were able to order a pizza from town delivered to our room. Perfect after a few hours of biking. The shower was hot, the room was clean and bright, the beds comfortable and the grounds were lovely. We got a double room and were able to fit the two bikes inside, but could easily have used a cable lock to lock them to the railing outside the room without worrying about getting them stolen. A swing by the pond to watch the sunset and a walking path through the woods was really great. We even went out to the walking path after dark to avoid the lights around the resort so we could see the northern lights! Riding to town was a cinch once we discovered the water route and it was fun to look at all the amazing lakefront summer homes along the way. We were a little disappointed that some of the businesses were already closed for the season (we biked in the fall for fall color), but we had a great lunch at Clementines (I was able to have the steak and gin and tonic I was craving for dinner the night before), the town was super sweet to walk around, I had a great ice cream at Kilwin’s and picked up a dark chocolate giant peanut butter cup for the ride back the next day. We also had a great visit at the Michigan Maritime Museum (totally worth the visit) and wished we had signed up for their one hour river boat tour. We loved the riverfront in this town. From there we biked three minutes to the north beach and rode to the end of the pier where we were alone to smoke a joint and sit and look at the water. It looked like the South Beach was more crowded since it was much more accessible to people staying in town on the other side of the river. All in all, The Sun N Sand seems mostly for family summer beach fun, but we loved it as a quiet simple and affordable option right on the edge of a sweet lakeside town that looked beautiful in the fall. Glad it was open slightly off-season.

We booked this hotel for my birthday weekend and I was so excited! I stayed at a different hotel on blue star highway last year and HAD to come back this year… we got to this motel and the outdoors are absolutely beautiful. The pond is adorable and my husband and I enjoyed sitting on the swing with our dog watching the ducks. That was the highlight of the trip. We checked in the motel and got our room, wasn’t expecting anything out of this world but didn’t expect the musty smell and to have a bed frame that was barely together. We sat down to make sandwiches and from the mirror we could see the middle bar was bent! It was not screwed in at all and moved…. That’s not normal? This worried us because we have a small dog who loves to crawl under beds and if this bed breaks I will be so devastated!!!!!!! We immediately went to the office and the lady at the counter called maintenance and he said he would be there in 10-20 minutes… he had gone home for the day so I thought it was wonderful he was coming back to fix the bed!! Well… he did not fix the bed. He looked at it and said “all our bed frames are like that it’s fine. AS LONG AS YOU DONT GET TOO BUSY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BED IT WILL BE FINE” YES! Those words came out of this man’s mouth! Excuse me?!?! How absolutely unprofessional, disrespectful and disturbing. My husband didn’t have words. We didnt know what to do… not even an hour later… the pole in the middle fell off the bed. THANK GOD the dog was on the bed with us. A couple minutes later we hear a knock at the door… it’s the front desk lady asking if we are still here?? My husband told her how the bed BROKE when had told us it was FINE! She said she would call him again and she left. About 10 minutes later we went back and asked for a different room. We were told there were no other rooms. She asked if we wanted to stay. We asked if we would get a refund for leaving… she was not sure and couldn’t give us a number for the manager. She told she would be there tomorrow MAYBE tomorrow.. we couldn’t even get a straight answer. She said “I don’t know I’m just a bus driver they asked me to come in tonight and I said I would” lol. WELLLLLL another 10-15 minutes later she comes knocking on the door and says if we leave right now her manager said we would get a refund. THANK GOD. I’ve never felt such chaos during a weekend that was meant to be relaxing and a celebration for my birthday! Oh the kicker :) as we are packing our stuff the maintence man shows up and opens the door and walked away when he saw us. 🤣 I really hope they upgrade these bed frames…. I was happy to drive the 4 hours back home to sleep in my bed knowing it wasn’t going to break! I was extremely disappointed 😔

We really enjoyed our stay at Sun n Sand. We stayed in the Beach building. The adjoining bathroom connecting the two rooms was perfect for our family of 3 plus the dog. We were looking for a centralized spot to have as a hub while exploring another cool area in SW Michigan. The sheets were clean and there were plenty of clean towels and washcloths that were refreshed after the second day. The rooms here are not fancy at all but they’re large, clean, and the ac units work fine cooling off the room quickly. There was a mini fridge, a little coffee maker (with coffee packs), and they offer ice any time in the office. To be fair there is room for cosmetic improvements but that did not negatively impact the quality of our stay. I would recommend bringing an eye mask if you are used to sleeping in a dark room and maybe your own pillow if you’re a side sleeper. On to the best stuff- The grounds are just so beautiful. The flowers and trees and lawns are lovely. There’s a huge backyard with wooded trails behind that. My dog was in sniff heaven and I just loved walking back there. The little pond and waterfall was nice and we enjoyed the swing by the pond one night for sunset. The woods out back are very cool, look carefully and quietly and you may encounter some wildlife and even some blackberries. There are a bunch of chairs available for use and fire pits with firewood supplied. Our family enjoyed their great little pool numerous times and even played a game of giant chess. We never got around to playing corn hole but there were several sets available for use on the property as well as a place to use your travel hammock and a volleyball net. Sun n Sand is a good option for a pet friendly home base near South Haven. The location is perfect for a short drive to several beaches, hiking trails, dunes, and even blueberry picking. The rooms are no frills and the establishment is older although it is maintained. If you’re looking for a clean bed to sleep in at a pet friendly spot with options for outdoor family activities then give them a try. I should also note that the entire staff we encountered were all friendly and helpful & you can tell they care about the place. We would stay here again.

We really wanted to enjoy our quick 2 nights as a place to sleep while we were working a wedding in town. I am a wedding planner with a VERY aggressive schedule over the weekend. All I required was a place to get some much needed sleep after working intense 18 hour days on Friday & Saturday. The rooms are nothing like the photos. I knew it would be tiny but not THAT tiny. My college dorm room was bigger. Regardless of the size, we were just there to sleep. We went out and bought new pillows, coffee supplies & toiletries since there is none in the room

During our stay on Friday night, we had issues with the TV, which wasn't too a big deal, but just the start of a series of awful sleep. Its satellite & didn't have reception. The remote didn't work for the tv, only the satellite box (no power or volume control). When getting up in the night to use the restroom, I stepped on earwigs, and realized there were at least 4 on the floor. I tried to get more sleep, as I needed to be up for a very grueling day of work starting at 7:30am on saturday. Early Saturday morning, while in the shower, the fire alarm started going off, while I tried to deactivate it, bugs started falling out of the fire alarm. I thought I had it solved & resumed my shower. It went off again, We had to pull it off the ceiling, while more bugs continued to come out of the ceiling. We made the split decision to check out immediately. I had a very busy day, and could not take up more time trying to figure out a solution. Upon check in we were told the front desk would be open at 8am, which we did not have time to wait for. We vacated the room & I went to work.

When we came back later that morning, (after having to rearrange my busy wedding schedule to make the trip back) the interaction we had with the front desk went from cordial at best to downright rude. The woman at the desk told us they were booked full & there was nothing to be done. She told us we should have called the front desk about the fire alarm. I was in a towel, with shampoo still in my hair, and barely covered, I could not have someone in my room at that moment - we were also in a time crunch. She mentioned she could move us to another room, but couldn't tell us if there would be bugs there too. If there was bugs on the 2nd floor, surely there's bugs on the first floor. She told us there was nothing to be done because I booked through expedia (we did not, we booked through United Hotels). She told us we needed to speak to a manager, but then was offended when we asked for the manager's phone number & was shocked we would actually call. I tried calling & emailing, and of course, there is no response. This place is horrible, I can't imagine having wedding guests or a wedding here like they advertise. I'd...
