But I digress. ||The “no cars allowed” past the front gate is genius. It creates an immediate departure from reality and transports you to a fairytale. ||Mindy is so kind and quite the chef! She wears a lot of hats. She is a gem! ||After taking us to our tent she encouraged us to explore. Which we did. And found fields not only of blueberries, but fields of lavender. And perfectly lined towering pine trees. Like Irene said, somebody must have used a ruler. ||Irene is the owner. And to say she is talented is a huge understatement. She created this dream. And made it come to life. Her attention to detail and her ability to make you feel right at home sets this place apart. ||I seriously couldn’t get over how clean the tents were. They were clean, comfortable, adorable, luxurious, and cozy! The heated mattress toppers were fantastic. And the adorable electric “wood burning” stove in the corner kept the tent nice and toasty during the cool nights. ||After 5 o’clock, or 5 o’clock somewhere, Linda appears. Linda is the bartender. This place is simply amazing. From the moment you arrive, you’re transported into this immersive experience that is so far beyond your normal day to day life you can’t help but wonder why you didn’t break away sooner.
My wife and I had the pleasure of escaping the kids for a night and chose The Fields of Michigan as our destination. We drove in from Chicago and spent most of the afternoon visiting South Haven’s (10 minutes away) endless shops and eateries. From there, we ventured to a nearby winery to sample some more of the local flavors and eventually found ourselves at The Fields of Michigan.
Once you arrive, you are greeted by Peyton who is the nicest kid that works there throughout the summer. Peyton helps you with your bags and whisks you off via golf cart to your tent. The tent itself is stunning. The bedding and decor are luxurious and each tent has its own bathroom, air conditioner, fire pit, etc.
Once settled, we found ourselves strolling through the woods on a tree-lined, tiki torch trail that led to the quaintest little bar. Other guests congregate there before dinner and Linda (Linda is amazing!) will make whatever drink you desire (mas margaritas por favor!).
After socializing for a bit, it’s off to dinner where a 30+ person outdoor table has been beautifully decorated with sunflowers and candles. The owner, Irene (also amazing!), greeted each guest and dined with us sharing her experiences and why she fell in love with The Fields of Michigan. Chef Mindy then greeted the table and provided an overview of what she was preparing for us that evening, and why it was special to her. She is simply delightful and her food / creativity will make you wish you were dining there for a week straight.
After dinner, the entire venue is lit by tiki torches and fires along the pathways. The stars are out in full force and most folks venture back to the bar retreat in the woods to visit Linda again for more entertainment and relaxation. You’ll find yourself that night sitting in front of your own personal fire pit, staring up at the stars and ultimately climbing into your electronically heated bedsheets.
In the morning, you can have breakfast and a Bloody Mary with Chef Mindy and then venture out to Saugatuck (15 minutes away) for more strolling and shopping.
If you have the ability, make this a destination of yours. It’s far removed from the normal hotel / AirBNB scene and was truly an amazing...
