I took my boys here for our first family vacation yesterday. We got there a few hours early to check the place out and find a grocery store as there's no food here. the person renting before us never showed up so the owners let us in early. We stayed in cabin c7 over the hill. It is hard to find the cabins as there is no signs or directions even after I was given a map and directions from the owner. After asking three people on the grounds where I could find the cabin and given 3 different answers I finally found it on my own just as the owner was coming down on a four wheeler to help because one of the couple's I'd asked for directions sent her to help me. We loved the cute little cabin but when we arrived the fridge was not at all cold but could've been because it was set on very low. There were no neighbors in the two cabins right next to us so we had our own little private getaway overlooking the water. We had a blast in the paddle boat though there is no supervision at all so had there been an accident with my lil ones in the water we would've been in trouble. Very quiet and nice grounds with a playground too. Bathrooms were very nice and clean. Owners were very nice. It is a very laid back do it yourself kind of campground with nothing fancy but that was the idea. The only issue we had was after getting in late from Tecumseh we hadn't been trying to sleep long and my 9 year old son kept itching himself. I turn my phone light on and around him and found bed bugs. I got a flash light and lifted up blankets and pillows and found lots of them! When I turned on the lights they all scattered into the walls and under the beds. I got my kids up at 2 a.m. and my 9 year old was covered in bites. I was so mad! I threw some of our belongings in my van and got my kids to leave. Leaving behind half our stuff and groceries and all. I went straight to the owners who live on the property. The woman told me my cabin had been empty for two weeks due to a no show and she had no idea. She did take all of my bedding and clothing down and paid to dry all of my stuff on high heat. She also reimbursed my fee and paid me for my groceries left behind. She was very apologetic as I had two little boys who were very tired being drug out at 3 a.m. and having an hour ride home. Her husband went down to investigate and did indeed find some bugs in the cabin. We really enjoyed our short time there but would highly recommend keeping the lights off and checking for bugs in places like these first as you never know what people can bring in or what someone may be unaware of.
Update* The owner contacted me via email to let me know they were having an exterminator come out next Tuesday to resolve the issue. I suggested some precautious cleaning advise and to let the other families know currently staying there but the owner doesn't agree with my advise. Knowing that my cabin sat empty for two weeks and hadn't been cleaned knowing that I was coming for reservation, even if I showed up a few hours early, disturbs me. There was an unlocked boat house/ game room full of non working games and dust and empty broken vending machines around the grounds that thinking back should have given me an idea of deep cleaning. The owner is somewhat right in telling me extra cleaning won't prevent the bugs but checking the other cabins, testing for them, and washing the curtains and vacuuming crevices routinely could prevent further spread. My 9 year old son had an allergic reaction and is covered in welts and is currently taking benadryl and using calemine lotion. I strongly feel this could have been prevented by extra precautions being taken while being open to the public and hope the owners take my advise and go further than just using an exterminator on the single cabin as there are two others in arms length empty beside it as well. I'm not trying to hurt their business or deter anyone from going there, rather to inform families of the risks of bed bugs anywhere. And to encourage cleaner habits for public facilities. Especially where children...
Read moreUpon arriving you check in a yurt home/office of the owner on the hill right of the red shack when you come into this place. All adults need to sign in and also list children. No problem. We had a large party .. we had the bunkhouse. It was big, also it was just service cleaned. Has 1 bathroom on 2nd floor... sink toliet and shower are separate from each other in like closets (but right next to each other). So if you have disabilities or unable to climb stairs .. bunkhouse is not for you. The campground restroom/shower house just down from bunkhouse... which water pressure or shower heads need checked in there and a good cleaning. Wi-fi did not work, Mr owner came down fixed, then it went back down immediately, they couldn't get it working, so Mrs owner came back down took the wifi equipment, did not bring it back and wifi never worked. Also no TV service... good thing there were lots of DVDs and board games. There was also a cabinet full of books. Had no hot water... owner came up said circuit popped, he reset it... we waited awhile, still no hot water. Owner came back down worked on it.... finally got hot water. My husband swept off the patio and straightened up the patio furniture. It was all over the place when we got there. It was nice sitting out there in evening, after August heat from the day...but if you have small children be careful.. drop off behind the bunkhouse. Had firepit with attached moveable grills. There was really nothing to do around campgrounds. There is a beach, but water too nasty to swim in, house at beach which is game room, but it is closed....building not safe.. there is a small playground for kids. It was ok .. kids only went down there once. Quiet time is 10p-9a. 1st door to bunkhouse must remain unlocked at all times... due to a coin washer and dryer for the campgrounds is in that front section. Fortunately, there is a 2nd door to the bunkhouse that you can lock. It was nice that the family was all together in one area. The kids did get to swim the 2nd day.. there is a public pool about 15-20 minutes away... because no one was risking swimming at the "beach" on the campgrounds. The issues we had with the wifi and hot water should have been resolved prior to us arriving. Thought since we reserved the place over a month ago, they would have checked that everything was ok knowing the place was rented out. We left the place spotless! Time with the kids and grandkids priceless...but we will not be back to this run down...
Read moreWe stayed here May 25, 26 2018. First time here. We were supposed to leave on May 28th but left early. First, let me say the woman owner we dealt with was very nice and helpful once we found her. When we arrived we had problems finding anyone to check us in along with another person who had arrived. There is a shack at the entrance we thought was were you checked in, but a sign on the door saying to "go to the round house". This house was up on a hill and if you are in an RV you have to walk up a steep gravel road to get to it. If you are handicapped, good luck. But once we found her she was very nice. Our campsite was #1. The road to it is gravel and in my opinion in bad shape with holes and ruts in it. Our site was between a "bunk house" on the left and a seasonal spot on the right. The seasonal spot is junky. Whoever is staying there apparently hasn't been there in awhile because it if filthy and junky. I find it unbelievable the owners are putting up with it. Very difficult to take a walk around the campground because of the road conditions and with it being so hilly in some spots it is actually dangerous because the asphalt in part of the steep road is eroded and has come apart. That mixed with the gravel makes walking up or down it dangerous. My wife slipped and stumbled and slid and fell. I found the campground in a run down condition. They charge you to take showers there. You have to put a quarter in a metered box for each 3 minutes! I read they did this because people were leaving the showers running but they could have put the push buttons in to stop that instead of coin machines. The internet was good. We won't return. This is hard to write because the woman was so nice. But I think it has been let run down and it looks junky, especially where we were camped at site 1. We left a day early just to get...
