Tour de Dirt Gravel Event 2024 – Floyd Family Campground
My son and I returned to the Tour de Dirt at the Floyd Family Campground for the second year in a row, and this time the weather couldn't have been more perfect. Unlike last year, where we faced some weather challenges, this year the sun shone brightly, and the trees were in full fall color, creating a stunning backdrop for our ride. The roads were some of the best I’ve ridden all year, making the experience even more memorable.
What truly stood out this year were the aid stations. The volunteers were absolutely incredible, going above and beyond to support every rider. Their energy and helpfulness elevated the event, making it one of the best I can remember. The sense of community was just as strong as last year, with participants cheering each other on, but the attention to detail by the volunteers truly made this year special.
Once again, we left with great memories, new friends, and an even deeper passion for the outdoors. My son and I can’t wait to return next year!
Kudos to the organizers and volunteers for another unforgettable event!

The Tour de Dirt Gravel event at Floyd Family Campground was spectacular! My oldest son and I decided to participate, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences we've shared.
From the moment we arrived, the participants' and organizers' energy and enthusiasm were palpable. The trails were challenging yet exhilarating, offering a perfect blend of adventure and scenic beauty. The camaraderie among the riders was heartwarming, with everyone cheering each other on and sharing stories of their experiences.
The Floyd Family Campground served as an ideal backdrop for the event. It's natural beauty and well-maintained facilities added to the overall experience. But what truly stood out was the sense of community.
Everyone, from seasoned riders to father-son duos like us, were supportive and encouraging. It felt like we were all part of one big, awesome family.
The Tour de Dirt Gravel event was a fantastic experience I recommend to anyone looking for adventure, fun, and community spirit.

Read moreThis is a nice-looking campground and we would have planned to stay here again in the future (for our yearly family gatherings in the area); however, our second visit (mid-July, 2025) to the Floyd Family Campground was not as pleasant as our first visit, in June of last year. Because our RV's shower stall is super tiny, we usually take our showers in the campground bath houses (if they're available). There are two bath houses at the Floyd Family Campground. I don't know if the one on the other side of the campground is in better shape than the one that was closest to where our RV was parked, but the bath house I tried to use (the women's side of the bath house) wreaked of a very strong mildew smell. The smell caused my sinuses to swell and my head to hurt, so I left the bathroom as quickly as I could because I'm very allergic to mildew spores (last year there was no smell of mildew in the bath house at that time; so maybe the mildew problem varies from year to year?). If you have an RV (with a shower that you like), I would recommend this campground for its attractiveness and its good location. However, be warned: if you're planning to stay over the weekend during the summer, and a group has rented the community building that is right next to the side of the campground where we were staying in our RV, the noise of the party may continue till midnight (as happened while we were there). We campers in the park are supposed to be quiet beginning at 10, so I don't know why the same rule didn't apply to the partiers in the community building. Their music was quite loud, but there's no full-time attendant on site at this campground that you can go to in order to complain about noise issues. Also, be warned that, even if you reserve one of their adorable tiny houses (with a down payment), you can be kicked out of the tiny house if they decide to move you out because someone else needs it at the same time (perhaps for a greater number of nights? or simply because they overbooked?). We were kicked out of a tiny house that we initially reserved (and found out that my brother and his family got it, instead--we were told that it was because they had "overbooked" the...
Read moreThe gorgeous Chantilly Farm in Floyd, VA is where we have called home-base the past seven months. We have branched out from here to travel to Maine and back to see New England in its entirety and down to South Carolina and North Carolina. We have traveled to the coast of Virginia and to Washington DC. But through all of these travels, no campground holds a candle to the peace and serenity at Chantilly Farm and the town of Floyd. From the sweet owner at Chantilly, to the blue ridge parkway being five minutes down the road, and the copious amount of deer running through the fields in the evening, this place is magical. The campground has the most beautiful trails for hiking and fun bike trails for the kids and adults. Everyone would enjoy the adorable farmers market on Saturdays and the quaint farm stores down the road with the most amazing organic produce, pastured meat, wildflower bouquets, and the best free range eggs. The local brewery, that may have the very best pumpkin beer we have tried. The bluegrass music on the streets every Friday evening brings the small town to life. Floyd has an artsy, eclectic feel that I’ve never found in such a small town before. If you ever find yourself in Virginia, this is the place to settle for a bit. As we drove away from sunny Floyd today, the trees were basked in yellow, orange, purple, and red hues that looked as if the entire area was blanketed in a 70’s vintage filter. I felt like laugh-crying because this has been home and I will miss our dear friends we have made, yet I am filled with all the excitement and joy that travel days are filled with. Because around the corner are more adventures and experiences that only this life...
