Horse fly warning at Haw Creek Falls! As far as pretty, it is. My wife and three kids and I went in the summer about three years ago. Water was low and flowing slowly but the kids and I got in. We didn't notice horse flies then. Once we got out, the horse flies attacked us relentlessly. Their bite is painful! They didn't bother my wife in the slightest since she didn't get in the water. We stayed for about five minutes thinking it would stop while moving out of the immediate water area. IT DID NOT! We ended up running to the car and getting in with wet clothes. We drove away about a mile to stop and change clothes. Horse flies were still swarming the car so we didn't get out. We drove ten miles. Guess what, still horse flies! Apparently they had latched onto the car somewhere that they wouldn't get blown off. I had to get out of the car and kill about 20 horse flies. My family was still so terrified they wouldn't get out of the car even after I said the coast was clear. Mind you, ten miles away. We all changed out of our wet clothes in the car. That was one weird experience. Really surreal experience. I highly doubt that's typical of the area since I've never heard any similar stories. But that was...
Read moreGreat for a 2 nighter. Kids love the water and big pool and limitless rocks. (I have jumped off into the pool and it's only about 3-4 feet with a good amount of water flowing, so pretty risky).
Very flat for campers. If you catch the right amount of rain (not too much to close the gate) the falls are amazing. There's a small water fall hike nearby. You may experience a few cars parked for the Ozark Highlands Trail, but I've only been here once in early November where all the campsites were actually taken.
The NFS is no longer maintaining the site. As far as I know, toilets will still be open, but it's carry out your own trash.
I have called the morning before we left and got a straight answer from the NFS if they intended to close the gate based on...
Read moreHonestly this is a great location and the view of the waterfall from the campsites is good. However there is no security or way to prevent people from taking your stuff once you leave to go hiking in the area, even if you pay the fees. Currently just had my tent and both sleeping bags inside stolen and the thieves cut removed all but one of the nailed in pegs from the ground before cutting the final strap from the tent to steal it. Came back to our campsite from town and hiking to find everyone gone and my possessions stolen. Camp here at your own risk and be careful and aware of your surroundings if...
