Rudd’s Creek Campground – Boydton, VA
My husband and I decided to take our daughter(18) camping over Columbus Day weekend for two nights, and we chose Rudd’s Creek Campground in Virginia. As first-time visitors from Florida, we didn’t know what to expect—but we were pleasantly surprised.
The campground is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and even though there was a government shutdown at the time, there were still attendants at the entrance. One of them, Marian, greeted us with a warm smile and went above and beyond to help us switch to a campsite right on the lake, site 10. It even had a little hidden footpath through the woods—absolutely beautiful and peaceful. She was truly a gem and made us feel welcome right from the start.
The facilities were one of the best parts of our stay. The campground offers flushing toilets, hot showers, and electric lights along the main roads—a big plus when camping with kids. Each campsite also comes with a fire ring and picnic table, and there are more primitive restrooms with pit toilets available around the grounds.
The only downside was the traffic noise from the nearby highway at the entrance, which was noticeable, especially at night. If you’re a light sleeper, it’s something to keep in mind.
We did have a challenging first night due to a large, inconsiderate group of illegal aliens camping nearby. Their children were extremely loud well past quiet hours, even riding bikes and shining flashlights at tents. Despite my husband asking them to quiet down around 1 a.m., there was no change. We had to call the non-emergency police line around 2 a.m., and thankfully, the Park Rangers followed up the next morning and addressed the issue with the family. We appreciated their professionalism and the fact that they also checked in with us afterward.
The second night was much better—rain helped keep things quiet, and that group packed up and left early the next morning.
Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely recommend Rudd’s Creek Campground for families or couples. It felt safe, clean, and well-managed, and the lakefront sites are especially gorgeous. I even felt comfortable walking alone to the restroom early in the morning, which says a lot about the environment.
We’ll certainly keep this spot in mind for...
Read moreFrustrating because google won't stop sending this, I dismiss it, sends it. We don't go to the campground, we go to the rec. Area across the street and a little further down. For the most part it is great there. This year not so much. Lack of an attendant, I assume, has brought around rude, dangerous people and boaters. Screaming obscenities and putting full throttle in front of the swimming area and going back and forth and back and forth which sometimes the swim area itself isn't that much better. We have been going here for a great many years and this is the first time I have ever been in the water and hit with such an extreme itch, i walked away with such swelling in my hand from I don't know what. It turned into a club hand for over a week, thank goodness I had taken my rings off when I saw the swelling start. People are just nasty here. Leaving the garbage and things on the beach. And how is it if you scream a couple of times from a picnic table out to your child who is hanging off of the orange thing and they can't hear you the first 10 times, no matter how loud you scream, you havent figured out the only one hearing you is everyone else you're interrupting trying to relax! off your lazy bum and go see your child. Floods out...
Read moreWe camped on site 34, it's a double camp site. The campers would have to sit side by side if you bring two campers. We only brought one so not an issue for us. I really love the lake front camping. I do agree with the other rater about the ticks and the paths to the lake. They need to cut down some of the brush. We are on site 34 and the path to the lake from our site is not bad. Our friends are on the first site (think 33) and the path to the lake is terrible. I also agree that the staff at the front gate are not friendly, but the Rangers that drove around were very friendly and waved as they drove through. also the ladies cleaning the bathhouses were really nice. We were also surprised at the amount of trash left behind, in the woods and down by the lake. Also the the previous campers dumped Grease on the ground- a big you to those A$$ holes, My dogs head was covered in Grease and we had to clean up your mess! One last thing - we can hear the tractor trailers when they cross the bridge. It's not bad but you...
