Cut to the chase, this was a fantastic and lovely, and unexpected experience. We were traveling with our dogs back home to Santa Fe and since this was listed as ‘dog friendly’ we booked it. They chain didn’t gouge us, the $20 fee was very reasonable. We didn’t expect how lovely, large, super clean the rooms would be at this price. The entire room was in superb almost like new conditions and so charming in it’s southwestern style. After a long road trip with up’s and too many down’s in the hotel area, everything here was prefect and we were shocked that such a high caliber ‘Lodge’ like this would be so affordable and in of all places Clayton NM. It’s a small town but whoever is running this establishment knows quality and is a perfectionist. A gem nestled in Clayton. Attention to detail is seen throughout. The soaps provided were of high quality. The furniture is lovely southwestern (see photo of the details on the door to the fridge). This was a lot like staying at a friends casita in Santa Fe. The grounds like the rest of the property is immaculate. Large areas of green grass and lovely landscaping for guests and pets, with chairs, a grill, and again everything was in pristine condition. Charming, lovely, not expected. The BW headquarters should be looking at this one location because after years of staying at La Quinta chain for the pet policy (which has changed recently for the worse), we will now look to book at other Best Western’s in the chain from now on but we will not automatically expect this caliber of quality. If for any reason you need to stay anywhere near Clayton NM, you should book...
Read moreHonestly pretty surprised by all the 5 star ratings. It's a budget chain so we had low expectations. Booked a 2 night stay for our family of 4. Our room was clean, wifi decent, it's in a good location, and the staff members we encountered were pleasant. Unfortunately this place didn't have even the bare minimum: towels and pillows. We were left with 2 bath towels for a 4 person reservation, 2 washcloths, and a single hand towel. It was an ordeal to get more towels.
You will need to bring your own pillows. There were 2 small throw cushion size pillows per bed. Like laughably small pillows. (approximately 15 inches square). The front desk doesn't have more so don't bother asking. There is not a Walmart/target/etc within 100 miles so we ended up buying pillows at the family dollar.
Also the toilet in our room didn't flush properly. You had to manually lift the float to get it to fill. I alerted the staff in the morning but it still was not fixed by the time we returned from sight seeing. They had cleaned the room and AGAIN left only 2 towels even though we carefully hung the used towels to be used again. We were so frustrated we decided to just leave and drive 4 hours home, not even caring that we paid for 2 nights.
A lot of other people seem annoyed by the breakfast bags. This is standard for COVID so we didn't expect much. Ours included in each bag: an Otis Spunkmeyer muffin, crunchy vanilla bar, water bottle, and a piece of mediocre fruit. We put them in our hiking packs and got breakfast to go at the truck stop...
Read moreMade reservation with them directly on the phone. I asked to have a ground floor room and he said that was available. I asked again before ending the call to make sure it was a ground floor room. He said yes. We got there and it was upstairs! I had just had a couple knee injections and couldn’t walk up stairs. They said they’d give us the only thing available on the ground floor but it was $40 more. Thankfully the manager reduced it the next morning to closer to the originally quoted rate.
The staff at the hotel were very nice, especially the ladies at breakfast.
The room was pretty good. NOTE: The pillows are these VERY FLAT PILLOWS that they stuff into a standard pillow case until it’s a square shape and tuck the case in. It makes them the size of a small throw pillow. It’s really weird. Who sleeps on a little square pillow? You can flatten several out and stack them and that works ok.
The shower is a big step into it. The soap is odd — like a weird unscented, non lathering soap. The shampoo and conditioner were in teeny tiny bottles that were very hard to squeeze stuff out of. They only had one of each in a “family room” that sleeps up to 7 or something. You’d need one per person.
We won’t stay again. It’s ok but between the odd things and the failure to handle our reservation as promised, it wasn’t worth it. The area as a whole seems to have poor quality hotels, as the Holiday Inn Express there is...
