My wife and I recently accepted job offers at The Ranch at Ucross: myself as a horse wrangler, and my wife as a cleaning crew manager and server. We were promised an RV spot with full hookups directly on the ranch. After a multi-day journey and over $1000 in travel expenses, we arrived late to an off-site RV park located in a very unappealing part of town, immediately feeling misled about our living arrangements.
Despite our official start date being the 6th, we decided to visit the ranch on the 4th, hoping to proactively meet the team. What we witnessed there was nothing short of alarming, especially concerning the welfare of the horses. As a seasoned professional who has worked on and visited numerous ranches, I was appalled to find horses tied to posts for hours without access to clean water. When I inquired about bathing stations, I was told they didn't have one and that horses were not bathed. There were no treats, and current employees informed us of an inconsistent and unstable feeding schedule. Furthermore, two horses designated for guest rides exhibited aggressive behavior, which I strongly attribute to their confinement and lack of proper attention.
Our interactions with Ruby, the ranch manager, were atrocious. After sharing some personal hardships, including the recent loss of our daughter, I gently inquired if my wife could potentially work closer to me as a wrangler, a suggestion I believed would be mutually beneficial to both us and the ranch's horses, given the dire conditions I observed. Ruby's reaction was beyond unprofessional. We were subjected to screaming, name-calling, and treated with a level of disrespect I have rarely encountered, even as a combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient. To add insult to injury, we were then given a mere four hours to vacate the RV spot, despite our long journey and significant expenses.
Ruby's complete lack of empathy and venomous demeanor were shocking. Her condescending attitude made it clear she views those around her as "lower class" or "trash." As a combat veteran and a former 911 paramedic of eight years, I have served my country and community with dignity and honor. To be treated in such a demeaning manner, especially after revealing a personal tragedy, is unacceptable.
I strongly urge anyone who values humane treatment of animals and respects veterans to steer clear of The Ranch at Ucross. This establishment's disregard for animal welfare and its manager's abhorrent conduct make it a...
Read moreWe arrived at The Ranch at Ucross with open hearts, hoping to volunteer and contribute positively, especially as we navigate a deeply challenging time in our lives after losing our youngest daughter. My husband's extensive experience as a combat veteran and paramedic, coupled with our shared knowledge of business operations and equine care, meant we came prepared to offer meaningful assistance. However, our experience was incredibly painful and degrading. The manager, Ruby, showed a complete lack of empathy, despite being aware of our personal circumstances. She subjected my husband and me to verbal harassment, simply because we offered ideas to improve teamwork and ranch duties. Her management style is not only abusive towards people but also neglectful towards the animals. We witnessed horses tied for excessive hours, with no water or supervision, significantly impacting their physical and mental health. From our perspective as experienced animal caregivers, this was truly alarming for animals that are central to the ranch's appeal. The combination of such harsh treatment and concerning animal welfare led us to decline our positions. We believe human dignity and animal well-being should...
Read moreThis was a multigenerational stay at Ucross which is important to note because there was something for everyone. The owners (? I think) were the best, so friendly, informative and accommodating. The rooms are huge, and while we had two people per room, they would have been big enough for four. The room itself was clean, but the garbage from the previous occupants was still in both trash cans, which was kind of gross but fine.||There were cats/dogs for the kids to play with, other animals to see, fishing for whoever wanted to fish, swimming for whoever wanted to swim (water was very warm), and hot tubs to enjoy. The food at dinner and breakfast was a solid good, and the bar was enjoyed by the adults in the party.||After dinner, we were set up with a much appreciated camp fire and smores, which made the evening really special for all.||The main downside was that we only had one night there, each of us commented we wished we could stay longer. We would...
