I only stayed one night at the campground while attending the Little League World Series and didn’t get to see any of the park. The campground is very nice with a couple drawbacks. It is first-come, first-serve without the possibility of reservations.
The campground uses the honor system where you pick your campsite and leave payment in an envelope at a box near the entrance. The sites are very nice and the entire campground is clean. Each site has a leveled raised gravel platform for your tent, a fire pit w/ grill grates, a picnic table, and a lantern pole. The campground has a clean, well lit bathroom with a single shower for each men and woman.
A somewhat insignificant issue I had with the campground was that all the wood including the pavilion and the picnic tables were covered in moss. We didn’t stay long enough to use the picnic table but if we had I would have wanted to cover it with a table cloth. The more significant issue of the campground is the sites are very close to Rauchtown Road which had traffic on it all night. Occasionally a Semi would come by and wake us up using it’s jake brake. For the most part we slept through it though since we were exhausted but bringing a pair of ear plugs would be a good idea.
Overall I would recommend the campground. Just bring a tablecloth...
Read morePlease do not take what I say as a hit to your intelligence in any way. It is simply a reminder. Please be cautious when giving your dog fipronil or imidacloprid, then taking them swimming in streams, creeks, etc, as it can kill off the insect and bird populations in that area for several weeks. They are pesticides, so they leech into the water, so who knows how far reaching that is. Here is a summary from Google that may say it better: •Spot-on flea and tick treatments containing chemicals like fipronil and imidacloprid can be harmful to aquatic life. •When treated dogs swim, these chemicals can wash off into the water. •Even weeks after application, these chemicals can be released in harmful levels, according to New Scientist. •These chemicals can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems, such as rivers and lakes, affecting insects,...
Read moreIf you are studying bryology, this is your laboratory. Look at all the moss on the rocks in the pictures I've posted. The park is just off rt 880 and has a roadside picnic pavilion and scattered tables. However, it's got more than other roadside state parks. There's a tent only camping area to one side just a little to close to the road for my taste. There's a ballfield and the nearby Rauchtown Creek with a little dam. A trail leads to the Castle Rocks, and the thousand steps trail that intersects the mid-state trail. A pleasant place for an afternoon picnic and maybe a field game or hike.
