We found this hidden gem over two years ago. I have been coming to the black hills for years (I honestly spend all my vacation time here in the Hills every year). You will not find another place as close to the park for the price. The stay is comfortable, clean, quiet, and quaint. I have seen every unit and have stayed in 4 different ones since the introduction to this lodge. The variety of unit type is what is nice about this facility and they have something for all types of travelers / guest, as shown on their website. My son and I have stayed in late August (well it is just me now). Joe and Lori have units for the âbackcounty / hikingâ type. I land here and this is base camp. I spend the day out in the backcountry and come back at dark. When me and the misses come back later in the fall, we request a larger unit with a bit more room and kitchen, different scenario. I have stayed in many of the other places in the southern hills and in Custer State Park resorts, and I will continue to make Calamity Peak Lodge âbase campâ of our Black Hills experience. For my vacation lodging dollars, which is always a concern, I am confident that I am getting the best value staying here at Calamity Peak Lodge. Joe and Lori take their property seriously and will do what is needed to right any issues, because nothing is perfect, and that speaks volumes to me because I can attest to their sincerity of making it right. In closing, the lodge has easy access off the highway. The lodge itself has 6 units at the office, which is located on the east side of the facility, 4 independent cabins which are located on the west side of the creek. Wifi is available with a better signal at the lodge units than the cabins, but hey, you are in the âHillsâ and all internet is spotty outside of town. Each unit has fans, no A/C, but that shouldnât be a concern since the facility is situated so that the afternoon sun is mostly obscured by the surrounding French Creek bluffs and pine trees that are on the ridgeline over shadowing the property. With the breeze that is always constant it seems in the Hills, by the time you get back to your unit after supper time it will already be cooled down and you will be closing the windows. Calamity Peak Lodge is only 15 minutes from Custer State Park west entrance and Wind Cave National Park heading east and 7 minutes +/- to the town of Custer. Thanks...
Read moreOur family took a trip to South Dakota from Tennesse and didn't know the area but was looking for clean, cost-efficient lodging near Custer state park and we choose this location due to other great reviews.|The owners were very nice and accommodating even before we arrived. We rented cabin 7 for 7 days, it has 2 queens, kitchen, full bath and was very private. It has a lot of steps up to it but they are very beautiful rock steps. |there wasen't any couch or place to sit to watch tv except the beds and since our stay was so long we asked if we could switch cabins. The owners were very nice and helped us work around vacancies and let us switch to cabin 6 . so we spent 4 days in 7 and 3 days in 6. We were out riding the 1880 train and they called needing us to move locations when we told them where we were at they offered to move us so we didn't have to interrupt our vacation. to us that was going over and above on customer service and we really appreciated it.|Cabin 6 has a bedroom with a queen and a living room with a couch and queen bed, full kitchen, full bath and a deck. it wasen't as private as cabin 7 but the space made our 13 days of close family time easier. If you travel with your family i am sure you will understand that. |The property was very nice, our daughter had to have her morning "coffee" over the bridge and creek. My daughter is a cat lover and they have a pet running around that helped with her homesickness so we thank them for letting her play with it.|as a whole we highly recommend this stay and wish we could...
Read moreIf youâre looking for a place out in the country yet close to Custer State Park and all the attractions, this is the place. Run by a family who pays attention to all the details the same as if a member of theirs was coming to visit. So clean you could eat off the bathroom floor. We had the smallest unit yet it felt just right for the two of us. There are several|space saving features and we were able to spread out without feeling cramped. A table and chairs are provided out side for each unit and we sat out there several evenings. There are also grills. Our unit had a microwave, mini fridge and a coffee maker with coffee provided. About a mile to several nice restaurants in town and a lovely coffee shop, all in quaint storefronts. The owners gave us a map and dining suggestions and were readily available to make a minor repair to our unit. They even have a friendly resident cat, Cash. We were there 5 days and couldâve easily stayed a week. Two things to know, no AC and no blow dryer but I always bring my own blow dryer and the fan they provided more than adequately provided a cool breeze. Given the location, the price, and the cleanliness of the place I would stay here again in...
