Springer Mountain shelter is okay as shelters go. It is 3.5 sided (almost enclosed) with a small loft that is totally protected from the elements. The problem is that the little beasties (mice) are relentless and will eat through your gear looking for food (or even just crumbs!). Also, the bears are perennial visitors but will not bother you as long as you don't bother them. Might be better off at one of the many campsites sprinkled nearby.
