If I could give less than one star I would and here's why: We were to take tent site 180. The forecast was showing rain and that was okay by us. We've camped in the rain before and aren't bothered by it. We were to go as a group, taking several sites and the rest of my group decided to check in a day late due to weather. The front desk worker tried to over charge our balance and when he realized this he told me I had to wait to officially check in until his wife comes in on Tuesday, otherwise it would show as if I didn't pay. Ok, I was fine with that. He proceeded to tell me that my site had a nice, big, tree that's good for tarps. That was great news. But, what he didn't tell me was that the road to get to my site was FLOODED out and I couldn't cross it in my car. Apparently there is a deep creek right in the middle of the road but the map doesn't convey this. There is a picture of a road so it looks as if it should be passable. It's not. Very misleading. I have a husband with a bad back and muscle disease, a toddler and a dog. We can't lug all of our stuff back and forth from the car ,over the covered bridge and then over to our site like that, especially in the rain and lightning because we can't leave our child and dog unattended. We tried but it got to be too much so we went to the desk to ask for a refund and were offered a different site instead. All of our stuff was wet at that point. You can't break down and then put back up wet camping gear. This guy knew where our site was and knew what kind of vehicle we were driving. The different site was something that should have been offered to us before we got to our site and started struggling with set up. When he refused to refund us we let him know we'd have our bank fight it. The man told us that the bank won't do anything because this is nature. That's not the point. We came willing to camp in the rain. Our issue is the impassable road and horrible customer care. We were not made known of this beforehand and we tried to make it work, impassable road and all ( as we traveled 3.5 hours to get here) but we just couldn't make it work and we were not given alternative options at check in. I would never recommend this place to anyone.
Edit: I just read some additional reviews and wish I was the one who researched this trip instead of letting my group do the campground selecting. The replies that the owners give on any negative review is definitely snarky. They state they are not rude but then always get in that last snarky remark. I don't need this campground to help select my next campground, as they like to toss out there to their negative reviewers. What I would like is to get what I paid for.
I could not drive my car through that body of water in the middle of the road. Who knows how deep it is or what's even in there. If we drove our car through that creek to get to our site, it would not have survived. If our motor got flooded, would this place have paid for repairs? No. So how can you expect paying customers who don't want their car motors to get flooded, to carry all of their camping gear from their car, across a covered bridge, and down to their site? Unacceptable.
New edit: My entire group ended up canceling once finding out we can't even access our tent sites. The owners ended up charging over $400 to our one friend's account. They were going to refund him the full amount, minus the deposit but still ended up shorting him $150. When he called to complain, they said it gets confusing when one person books for multiple sites. How is it confusing? None of the other campgrounds we've stayed at has this issue. When one person calls and puts a hold on multiple sites, each individual person still needs to call in and place their own deposit on the site they are taking. As soon as we each started calling individually, the campground should have attached our names to the site we put our deposit on. That would have prevented any "confusion". I'm extremely disappointed in the extent of bad business and lack of care this company...
Read moreI booked site #97 over Memorial Day Weekend and into Tuesday. My friends booked a site next to me and some other friends were down in the tent area along the creek. This campground has everything myself and my friends were looking for ... which is very simple: Some shade, water nearby, 30-amp & water supply (Though we also had sewer), level sites, and nice people. None of us have kids and are in our 20's and 30's.
The RV sites we had backed up to a 45-degree embankment on the other side of which is the pond. This was no problem, though it would have been nice to have a view of the pond. Some sites closer to the main entrance do have pond views from your RV. Really the only thing I disliked was the area behind my RV site, and others along the pond, are not "your" space. This means if you feel like fishing directly behind your site you may not be able to do that as random people could be hanging out, fishing, doing whatever. All other campgrounds I've visited that have a lake, pond, or stream directly at the site prohibit other people from walking back there. It's basically your private site that allows you access to the water. That was not the case here, so just be aware if that is something to which you are accustomed.
The proximity of this campground to Pine Creek Gorge (The PA Grand Canyon) is a bonus. They're not right next to it, but are only a 10-20 minute drive, depending on where in the Gorge you're looking to visit. We took a drive out to the parking area at Darling Run and rode our bikes all the way to Blackwell, via the rail trail. My friends rode back to their truck and I decided to continue my ride back to Stony Fork Creek. This is doable, though there is a creek crossing to access Stony Fork Creek Road from Route 414. Overall, it makes for a very nice 24-ish mile ride.
The campground itself is situated in a little valley with ridges on each side. It makes for some beautiful scenery and photography. The stars at night viewed from the campground are stellar! Limited light pollution other than campfires and one or two far away towns. Nature abounds in the campsite, especially at night where the sounds of frogs and distant packs of coyotes can be heard.
A Verizon WiFi Note: According to Verizon's map, there is no signal at the campground. 95% of the time we had no service on Verizon. If you absolutely need service for working remotely, this may be a problem. Otherwise, enjoy your time away from the outside world.
Definitely worth the experience and I highly recommend Stony Fork...
Read moreWe got a little lost driving to the campground, but it was worth the trouble. Their primitive tent section is on the other side of Stoney Creek and requires that you drive through. With encouragement from the staff, we conquered our fear and plunged in with our Nissan Sentra. It was worth it! We crossed effortlessly, but it was exciting! The Tent Sites are wonderful. Some shaded, some sunny - all with a thick carpet of grass. Each tent site has a picnic table and fire ring. Firewood is sold at the camp store as well as bagged ice. There is a small bath house centered near the footbridge over the creek which houses a shower, sink and relief stalls. My Daughter and Grandchildren utilized the campground amenities to the the fullest - enjoying the Swimming Pool, Fishing Pond, Paddle Boats, Playground, Laundry and Game Room. We appreciated the well stocked camp store.
The Staff is friendly and helpful and they keep the campground well maintained. The Bath Houses are clean and our fellow campers helped keep them that way by picking up after themselves. Although most of the trailer sites are occupied by permanent campers, there are plenty around the pond and near the swimming pool for shorter stays. They also have several cottages for rent. Stoney Fork Creek Campground is definitely worth a visit if you happen up that way.
Tent Site Info: Sites 123 - 132 are full sun, but it appears that they are reserved for special camp events as there were no site markers and when I inquired about them, was told that they were not available. Sites 160 - 184 require the creek crossing. Site 160 is full sun, Site 161 is shaded. Sites 167 & 168 are shaded, secluded and have a sloped bank to the creek. Sites 133 - 159 require that you exit that main campground and re-enter on another road (there is no path to the main campground so a short walk down Stoney Fork Creek Road is required to utilize the amenities.) Several of the top of the hill 133 - 142? are permanent RV. Tent Sites 147 - 150 and 151 - 153 are creek level. Sites 146 - 142 are on a bluff over the creek. 154 - 159 are hillside.
How we got a little lost: Coming in from the Rt. 15, Bing Told Us to…… Turn left onto Broughton Hollow Rd Turn left onto Shelmire Rd Turn right to stay on Shelmire Rd (missed this turn, proceeded to Ox Bow Rd in error.) Bear right onto Rattler Rd Unpaved Road Turn left onto Stony Fork Rd
We should have followed Broughton Hollow Rd. to the end (passing Shelmire Rd.) and taken a left onto...
