I used to work at the resort as a young teen when it was under previous management. The resort has greatly depreciated since then in terms of customer service.
Knowing how beautiful the property is and how unique the location, we had our rehearsal dinner and welcome party through the resort. I do have to give a 5 star credit/rating to Chef Frank and his wonderful staff for the awesome food and service. The Rock Golf Course was well maintained. We had played earlier in the year when it was sub-par due to it being early spring. This time, the sand traps and greens were in great condition. I hit basically every bunker so I should know! Also, shout out to Jessica Lytle who made a beer and Bloody Mary run for our large party out on the course. She was very accommodating!
However, my 2 star rating is based on the following:
From looking at the resort in terms of housing and rehearsal dinner details, the communication and consistency were lacking. We were told one thing, but then there was no follow through or things had changed. I would not use them again due to the multiple errors on the resorts part with no attempt at making it right.
The errors were: incorrectly assigning cabins/rooms Assigning two 2-bedroom cabins when they only possessed one. We were given the choice to either pay the difference between a 2 and 3 bed cabin or move my bridal party to the resort hotel, away from the festivities. An individual stepped up and paid the difference for us as a wedding gift, but that still meant we paid for it. The stove in the East Wing cabin and other amenities were not working. We were told they did not fix it during their stay nor offered any sort of compensation. Kayaks were unusable due to leaks and there were few to choose from. We heard this from the East Wing group and a person from my bridal party. There used to be multiple canoes and kayaks to choose from, I'm not sure what happened. Our grandfather who is sick with cancer, wheelchair/walker bound, surprised us by making it to the wedding; however, he was assigned a non handicap room and I'm not sure if that was by his choice or not. Being stubborn he didn't want to move after settling. When we asked what we could do because he needed to shower, the front desk told us there was a shower chair he could use. We were surpirsed by this unexpected accommodation only to see that it was a metal pool patio chair. Our grandfather had a catheter and we were so afraid he would injure himself further on such a chair or cut himself and make him even more sick. Anytime we expressed dissatisfaction we were reminded that we got a $20/nt discount for the hotel rooms and $40/nt discount for the cabins; however, the discounts were due to booking our rehearsal dinner through the resort and outside the scope of the above errors. The resort did not see it that way and made no effort to make their mistakes right. It costs $35/nt to reserve and use the bonfire pits next to the cabins even though we rented the cabins already and you must buy their firewood.
Individuals did step up to try and make it right, but it still cost us in the end. If it were not for the individual people, then I would have given a zero to one star rating. I would not use the resort for any sort of event or to stay for vacation. I would advise going to Papins, Wa Wen, or the Drummond Island Hotel. The pros did not outweigh the cons in...
Read moreThis is why we loved this place:
We discovered Drummond Island Resort when trying to plan a wedding on the more well known Mackinaw island and realizing that Mackinaw island weddings are outrageously expensive and highly overrated. Little did we(and now you) know that this hidden gem is a mere 1 hour away in the upper peninsula.
Let me start with the location itself. A short ferry ride that runs all day and night brings you to the magical island of Drummond where you will follow a road to the Drummond Island resort. There, our wedding party was treated to a rustic getaway.
The lodge rooms offer very comfortable kings and queen sized beds as well as cool loft rooms. The rooms are fully stocked with tvs, microwaves and coffee makers.
The cabins are where you and your family are going to want to stay. Enough room for the whole family and more, beautiful decks to sit and relax or grill on. Also large jacuzzi bath tubs in the Master. The pond cabins are secluded and wonderful to get away from hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The Russell cabin is a fantastic hunters getaway(that's the best way to describe it) with antlers used for all the decorations, the rustic yet very warm feeling cabin is perfect for indoors or outdoor relaxation. 3 rooms and enough lounging area for a small army, this is the cabin you want.
But the best cabins of all are all bayside. You cannot beat breakfast, lunch, or dinner without overlooking the fishers and wildlife on the bay.
Restaurant : Frank the chef is possibly the best chef you will ever have the pleasure of eating food from. He takes his food very seriously. He loves making food for groups and is very good at it. He made dinner for 32 and all plates came out within 5 minutes of each other just as hot and delicious as the others. We had local whitefish cooked to perfected with a mango chutney on top that was to die for. Pork loins with an apple demi-glaze and applesauce that was delectable. And a Chicken Marsala that you couldn't help but lick the whole plate clean.
We also got breakfast made that was a close second to all the dinner plates. If you do get married here, make sure you request at least one morning of breakfast buffet. Fantastic!
The wedding coordinators, Amy and Mary will say "yes we can do that" to all your wedding needs to make your wedding feel special. Their staff are always cheerful and willing to go the extra mile. Honestly, there was no detail left unnoticed and we left the island feeling very pampered.
Finally lets talk about the beyond picturesque grounds themselves. You won't lack photo opportunities, just take a look at the chapel in the woods!
If you want the perfect fairytale destination wedding, choose Drummond...
Read moreIt's hard to know where to start. We arrived a little early, came to see if we could check in. Nope, absolutely not before 4 pm check-in time. We were a little surprised that this seemed to be a hard and fast rule since lots of hotels seem happy to check you in early if rooms are ready, but no big deal, we went for a drive and a a walk and returned at 4. Room hadn't been cleaned yet. Waited another 45 minutes (other guests did too), and then it was not the type of room we'd been promised. Person at desk listened to the voicemail we'd gotten, insisted he couldn't do anything about it, and the manager couldn't be reached. This was pretty much the general attitude we encountered. "No pool towels? I'll have someone bring some." Half an hour later, no pool towels. The place is obviously short-staffed this summer, as are many places, but the problems seemed bigger than that. ||The lodge in general is a bit run down. Room was comfortable enough but extremely dark and poorly lit. No comfortable seating in the room. Bathroom is very basic. Rustic decor ok, but weirdly they seem to be trying to marry that with "industrial" which ends up looking kind of unfinished. Kayaking was fun and free, but the kayaks are not in very good shape. Pizza and salad at Pins were quite good but the service was not very competent (food came, utensils had not yet come, had to ask three times for water, etc). Breakfast there was terrible though - small buffet of mostly out-of-the bag and largely inedible food, for which they should be embarrassed to charge anything let alone $10/person. We expressed this opinion to the hostess and then to the lodge manager, both of whom shrugged. (Manager claimed that no one else had ever said that, which I simply cannot believe - it was that bad.)||Interestingly, the "fine dining" restaurant was a completely different experience and a bright spot of our stay. It's currently only open a few days a week, with a very limited menu, and I wouldn't really call it a "small plates" restaurant, as advertised, but the food was simply but perfectly prepared, beautiful and delicious. Both the waitress and the chef, who came out to speak to us, were warm, friendly, and clearly cared about doing a good job. We ate on the deck, looking down through the trees to the water... couldn't have asked for a more pleasant setting for a...
