Much needed long weekend of relaxation at the Inn. We stayed Labor Day Weekend 2020. Room: The English Garden Suite was bright, cheery and very clean. Fantastic bed linens, so much so that we found the tags to purchase for home. Keurig in the room for coffee and tea. Suite comes with a private courtyard. Choose your room wisely. There are two rooms down by the pond, but you will have to navigate a live stone staircase and there is no parking by these two rooms. Lovely setting... just make sure you are not bothered by walking a bit to your room.
Property: Being on the farm, rooms are spread out so you feel as though you are miles away from other people. Each evening we let the Inn Keepers know where and when we wanted breakfast... in the main room, in the gazebo, in our courtyard. Pool area is spacious, plenty of lounge chairs, tables and chairs for the guests. Pond with fountain is simply lovely.
Neither of us had cell signal in our room... which was on the bottom part of the building, but we did not mind. We wanted to be unplugged from the world. We could get signal other places on the property. No WiFi passwords posted (and we did not ask), but we were able to connect to an open WiFi when we wanted. Again, if internet is a requirement, ask which rooms are best for that.
Food: WOW! Breakfast was ready and waiting each morning. Started off with coffee, OJ and homemade bread (different each day). Cranberry Walnut, blueberry... Then the Inn Keepers brought granona with yogurt and fruit. Next out came the main course... different each day. Lightest fluffiest crustless quiche I've ever had (YUM). Day 2 homemade Belgian waffles, light and crispy... and Day 3 fluffy scrambled eggs. Each breakfast came with fruit and toast. Next to the flavors is the presentation... each plate was culinary artistry... beautifully presented.
Dinner in the Wine Cellar: We purchased the proposal package which came with private dinner. We chose the wine cellar, however, we would have asked for dinner anywhere else on the property. The cellar is beautiful, quite. We had crispy shrimp, salad, filet, I had shrimp and my husband had lobster tail, then berry crumble hot out of the oven for dessert. The presentation of every course was just outstanding!
The Inn Keepers: Sweet couple, very energetic and helpful. Lance and Sandy were always available, eager to make your stay special. We had a few adjustments to the dinner and they accommodated with a smile. We had planned to say back in May for our wedding weekend, but had to change plans due to COVID. They were very accommodating and eager to do anything they could to make our stay special.
Whether you are coming from afar for a taste of Chester County, or of you're local (like we are) and need a change of pace, scenery and a slice of heaven, we highly recommend the Inn...
Read moreWe have not had great experiences at Bed & Breakfast establishments in the Brandywine area. Most were good. But my wife and I always felt like we were just another guest visiting for a couple of days. But not at the Inn at Whitewing Farm. From the moment I made reservations over the phone I knew this place would be different. The co-owners, Lance and Sandy Shortt, welcomed us with open arms, in a socially distant way, telling us their interesting life stories over a cup of tea and cookies. Our comfortable accommodations in the Jockey Room included WiFi and Cable. After settling in we took a walk around the expansive property. Whitewing Farm is beautiful this time of year, and conveniently located relative to other attractions like Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, Nemours, and Hagley Museum. Our breakfasts, which always included a variety of fruit and an edible flower, were good and portions were sufficiently large enough to keep us satisfied through late afternoon. The dining area was usually filled for breakfast but the tables were separated by a large distance and everyone wore a facemask while not eating. Perhaps one of the most memorable experiences was our private dinner in the Wine Cellar. Lance and Sandy offer a private dinner option that is just amazing. Our seafood dinner included crab cakes, lobster tails, scallops, and shrimp with grilled asparagus and a salt encrusted baked potato. We started with a lovely Caesar salad and hot rolls served with butter. We had a choice of two different types of water along with a sparkling Champagne. Lance and Sandy arranged to bake my wife a chocolate birthday cake which was partially consumed for dessert. Over the next two days we would pull this cake out of the refrigerator for a little snack. It was absolutely delicious, along with the entire dinner. There was always someone available to clear off plates or refill water glasses as needed, but for the most part we felt alone and comfortable. Clearly ranked as one of our better dining experiences. I must admit to being a little sad when we said our goodbyes to Lance and Sandy. Over the last several days we got to know them and they got to know us. Delightful people always thinking about making their guest’s visits as pleasant as possible. We look forward to seeing...
Read moreWhile looking for a nice room local to Longwood Gardens my wife and I stumbled across the Inn at Whitewing Farm and are overjoyed that we did. A quick glance at Google maps shows the Inn is a converted farmhouse located in a beautiful rural area. But what you don't see is the warmth and charm of the rooms, and dedication to excellent service by the owners.
The room we stayed in, Fat's Wallow, had a clean white-country look. And although not very large, there was plenty of space around the king-sized bed. I did wish the night stands were a little larger for my tablet and phone and every thing else I tend to drop next to bed. The bed was memory foam; my wife was very happy and although I normally prefer a firmer mattress, it grew on me and I slept very well.
We stayed in December, so I cannot comment on the air conditioning, but the heating was excellent, which we appreciated after a cold winter evening walking around Longwood. The bathroom fixtures showed a little wear, but worked perfectly with plenty of near-instant hot water and very adequate water pressure.
Note, that the Fats Wallow room is located in a remote building, down by the pond, as far from the main lobby as possible. There was a very nice walk, either along a stone walk with steps and railing or across a small field by the rabbit hutch. If you have any issues with walking or steps you should pick one of the other rooms. But you will miss a gorgeous view of the pond, and in our case a happy sighting of a red fox running by our window early in the morning.
Breakfast was a happy surprise that went above and beyond expectations with not just the usual spread of eggs, bacon and orange juice. There was an excellent selection of fruits tastefully cut and presented, as well as three different types of homemade bread, gingerbread, cinnamon and pumpkin. Along with yogurt cups and a full selection of coffees and teas, it was a great start to our day.
I can highly recommend the Inn at Whitewing Farm, and we plan on returning...
