I booked the Cave Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast in early February as a surprise for my partner's birthday and our anniversary. We stayed in the Gold room. Not only was this one of the few bed and breakfast's operating during the wintery months, but this was by far one of the most reasonably priced and approachable. Speaking only on the planning of our stay, the staff, Kyle and Jordan, were able to answer every question I had before booking including dietary restrictions, early/late check-out, things to do in the area, and general inquiries about their property. Jordan was sincere, helpful, and pleasant to speak with every time I came up with a new question in the weeks prior to our stay and solved any issue I came up with tactfully and completely.
Upon arriving, we were met with the lovely and quiet countryside property that alone could be a destination for the historical and architecturally inclined. The property is the ideal mix of off-the-beaten-trail and nearing civilization where you feel far closer to nature and restfulness, but are able to reach modern comforts such as fast food, grocery stores, or even the nearby waterpark and ski slopes in a short drive.
Checking in to the property, Jordan and Kyle met us in the entry hallway while their adorable dog, a Boykin spaniel named Ari, calmly greeted us once inside. We had an unusual check-in situation but Jordan was more than eager to assist us and offered a brief tour of the home before leaving us to continue with our plans elsewhere. The interior of the home and the design is an incredibly warm, endearing, and comfortable callback to classic rustic life with a touch of luxury. While the home itself is an antique, there are all modern furnishings and facilities you would expect at any hotel. Comfortable and large toilets and showers, smart tv's in the bedroom, electric fireplaces, and great views out every window. With both electronic and physical keys and locks, you can feel safe and private while still coming and going as you please.
While my partner and I believed the Gold Room was the best quarters in the home, it is hard to draw a comparison when all rooms are equally private, cozy, and unique. As an add-on to the stay, we requested champagne and flowers in the room which were both exquisite and brightened up our stay!
Jordan had prepared chocolate covered strawberries and left them in the dining room for guests to snack on along with teas, coffees, and snack accoutrement. The beds were very comfortable and in the morning sunlight slowly warmed us and woke us up naturally for a weekend of exploring the area.
Breakfast was served at a reasonable time and the food was incredible. Everything was freshly prepared with unique dietary needs taken into account and a wide assortment of other breakfast fare for the table such as scones, brownies, fruit, bread, and jams. Nearly everything was handmade from scratch by Jordan with produce sourced locally. I believe even the jams and preserves were canned by Jordan's family. I am not an older person but this is likely the best breakfast I have ever been served. Conversation with the other residents was lighthearted and fun.
After another day of exploring the area, we called it early and returned to play with Ari the Boykin and nap. The house was quiet and our nap was refreshing. We eventually came down to play board games and sip tea and finish eating some of the sweets left over from breakfast.
On our final morning it was just a few of us left which made the conversation and food more intimate and special. Again, we cannot express enough how delicious, meaningful, and carefully prepared the food was by Jordan and Kyle.
Overall, our stay was relaxing, joyful, and wholesome. We know that some older reviews cite poor breakfast options and other issues, but these are directed at the prior stewards of the home. Kyle and Jordan could not have been better hosts. We cannot overstate how much we loved our stay, and cant wait to return again! Thank you...
Read moreI cannot recommend this B&B and would advise that you go elsewhere until the owners are able to consistently provide customers with a proper and pleasant stay. Afterall, you are paying for the room and shouldn't be made to feel like an unwelcome house guest, especially when the problems encountered are of the owner's making. I'm glad that some people have had good experience here, but sadly we did not. Judging by the other reviews, we aren't the only ones.
Service - Sadly I cannot say a single good thing about the service. From the moment we arrived we felt like unwelcome house guests and noted that landlady was impolite, and moody at every encounter. This honestly isn't a deal breaker for us as we were looking to become fast friends but given the way our breakfast service unfolded, it is worth noting as it added to the unpleasantness. Breakfast was a disaster. The first day was a small/inadequate portion of french toast and a glass of orange juice. There was a keurig machine for coffee but there were no coffee pods, water or cream. There were two soft apples in the fruit bowl. That was it. The landlady left after putting the food on the table without even checking if everything was okay. We said nothing, thinking that perhaps it was just an off day. The other guests had commented that their previous breakfasts had been adequate but nothing amazing. However, on the second morning, when all the other guests had left, the cook/owner didn't even show up for breakfast. The table had not been cleaned from the day before and nothing had been resupplied! There was still no cream in the fridge or water for coffee, which I guess was appropriate considering there still weren't any coffee pods to make coffee in the first place. When I called at 9:20, I heard the phone ring in their private quarters and I could hear them talking about what to do. They didn't answer my call but called me back later to say that she had been feeling ill and overslept and that breakfast would be available in 15-20 minutes, if we still wanted it. A breakfast of two messed up eggs, 2 small overcooked sausage patties, dry toast and some blueberries were dumped in front of us on the table that was still dirty from the day before. Nothing for the dry toast and no coffee, no juice, no water either- nothing! Not even an apology. She acted like we had caused her a huge inconvenience and simply went back to her room. We said nothing. No matter what she says in her rebuttal to this review, this is not okay. If she does say anything, it should simply be an acknowledgement and apology. They need to listen to the customer and that this is not an okay way to run a business.
Room. The room was nice. The bed, linens, water pressure and towels were very good. The facilities are definitely tired and need a good cleaning and maintenance. The tapestry was heavy with dust and the blinds were broken and discoloured, as reported many months ago by other guests. This isn't vintage - it's neglect.
No matter what excuse the owner gives, this is not a consistently well run B&B. We were neither high maintenance or difficult guests and until the owners get an attitude change towards how paying customers should be treated, I would recommend you...
Read moreMy husband and I planned a week in Virginia to visit family outside Richmond and then spend some time in the Shenandoah Valley. We were looking for someplace off the beaten path to spend two nights with easy access to Skyline Drive and Cave Hill Farm fit the bill. We have stayed in numerous B&B's over the years, both inside and outside the US, and they generally have a more homey and personal ambiance than you will find in any hotel. I also loved the idea of the farm morphing through various businesses over many years in the same family.||||The setting of the B&B is somewhat remote and very peaceful, but still not far from the ‘town’ area. There is a small ‘museum’ in the basement of the house that is quite interesting. Sadly, the couple that is serving as Innkeepers, Jeffrey & Brittany, while pleasant, do not seem cutout for the Innkeeper role. They live on the main floor, and while the guests can knock on their door for help, they pretty much disappear after breakfast. Breakfast was nothing special, certainly not on par of most B&Bs.||||We arrived at the B&B later than expected (after dark), so rather than going to the family run brewery nearby for dinner, we decided to eat some leftovers we brought with us. We asked for some microwaveable plates which were provided. However, the microwave was very dirty and there were no napkins in the dining room. We were able to get some paper towels out of the powder room to cover the plates during cooking.||||We stayed in the Gold Room which was nicely furnished, but lacking in some necessities. The toilet paper roll was about half used, and no additional roll was provided. There was no bathmat for the shower, and the shampoo in the wall mounted dispenser was close to running out. There were no cups in the bathroom either. The lighting in the room was poor, which made it difficult to read in bed. Electric outlets were lacking, so I was not able to use my CPAP machine because the only outlet near the bed was not easily accessible, and I’m not sure if there was even room for another electrical cord.||||There were only two other rooms occupied the two nights we were there, and I heard similar complaints from at least one of the other guests. I generally try to peek at other rooms in an establishment for future reference (in case of a return visit). Several unoccupied rooms were left open after the previous guests checked out, and they sat uncleaned for the duration of our stay.||||I would love to see this historical home succeed as a B&B, but I’m afraid that may be impossible without a little more care and attention from...
