I stumbled on to this hotel while making some rather last minute changes to a trip. It was meant as a stop over while returning to KC from Colorado. The real stop was to be Lindsborg but I was forced to look at other places to stay when I could not find anything in Lindsborg. This hotel popped up and seemed to be the right place at the right time for the right price. Plan changes the week before our trip meant adding another room and fortunately we were able to do it. ||When we drove up after a long day of driving, I confess to feeling a small sense of trepidation. I had a carful of slightly edgy, tired people and was danger of being in a lot of trouble for booking this place.||But as soon I entered and was greeted warmly by Chris, the experience became one of Happy discovery and charm. Instead of being grumpy, my party looked around and asked me how I found this place.||The hotel was clean, inviting and charming. Definitely not a generic experience at all! When I tentatively explored the next morning, a worker found me and gave me an impromptu, unofficial tour, apologizing for not knowing the full details of the history, but giving me enough to feel like I need to go back. There was apparently a tour later that day which I would have loved to join, but we had to stay on schedule. I think it would be a great weekend getaway/girls trip. Go for the tour, get into the speakeasy AND the Sunday fried chicken dinner, which I hear is delicious.||For details, which are only meant to inform you when making decisions, the hotel is about an hour away from Lindsborg (which I did not realize. But at least was on our way back to KC). There is not a whole lot for a fast meal at the end of a journey, unless you like Casey's pizza, but there is/are kitchenettes where you can make something.||Breakfast right now is all prepackaged food and you may have to make your own coffee, but everything you need is available and ready for you to make it.||My only wish is that there was some fresh fruit, like bananas available as well.||Most rooms have an ensuite, but the DELUXE room rate is for a room that includes a shared bathroom. I have stayed at old hotels before where this was a thing, so was not daunted by this. I believe only 2 rooms share, and it is clean and close.||our last minute room addition was one of these deluxe rooms, and we enjoyed it. the room had a lovely B&B feel to it. Above the door was only some trellis work so I'm afraid anyone in the hallway/living room/kitchen may have heard snores, conversations or coughs very clearly. Sorry!||The flight of stairs gong up has no landing. There is a mechanical chair lift which my 80-some mother rode up with Chris' help. She refused to ride it back down without him, though, because it got stuck a couple of times. If you have mobility issues and need this, I would suggest being clear about this need when you book.||The Suite room bathroom also has a step up. ||All in all, if you would like a historic hotel experience, (and I hope that you will discover suddenly that this is an untapped experience), make plans to stay at this hotel. there are restaurants within 10 miles if you don't want to cook or have pizza. Plan to go on the tour and the Sunday dinner. Ask about the history of the wood panels above the dining room doorway, and the bullet hole in...
Read moreI'll never book here again. I made this reservation 2 days before my arrival, which was already past their 7-day cancellation window. I was really looking forward to the expected 60 degree weather, and staying in the beautiful hotel. The morning of my arrival, before I drove 8 hours to get there, the weather report changed drastically and a massive storm with tornadoes were expected, which would have put me in danger for my drive home. I contacted the property immediately, and they were not willing to give me a refund, even though I checked their availability and they were not fully booked. Their cancellation policy states that they request that if you are feeling ill, stay home, and they "will work with you," but after speaking with their staff member, Chris, they would not make an exception for an expected natural disaster out of my control. He began giving me a very rude attitude, and I have all the communication documented because it was all via text message. Chris finally offered me a gift certificate, but I explained that this weekend was the only time this year I would be able to do this trip, and I'm due to give birth in September, so I will certainly not be able to do an 8 hour road trip any time soon after that. I asked him many times for a refund due to a natural disaster and explained that if he is not willing to provide that, I will put a claim in with my credit card company and they will be in contact with him. He did not respond, so I filed claims with my credit card company which guarantees reimbursement for travel cancelled due to natural disasters. It's a good thing I cancelled my trip, because there were 6 tornadoes the day I was supposed to be driving back. If anyone is interested in seeing this communication, I'm happy to add photos of the text screenshots to...
Read moreI had the pleasure of staying here for a few days last month, and I loved it. The tunnel tour gives a unique glimpse at history that has been all but forgotten in modern times, and the guide is an excellent storyteller. For those intrigued by such matters, I would also highly recommend the paranormal tour, and the lady who investigates here has quite a few intriguing tales to share. The escape room is definitely challenging, and the hotel décor gives one the impression of Victorian times, much like walking through a historical museum with artifacts from the turn of the century. Although the regular rooms are indeed comfortable, I would also recommend the suite if you feel like splurging. In some hotels, "suite" simply means "larger room than most," but here, it means "your own apartment." There's a spacious living room attached to the bedroom, which is made all the more interesting by the circular bed, and just across the hall is your own private kitchen. For guests in the other rooms, there's access to a living room area that reminded me so very much of the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London, and the chicken and covered wagon décor in the kitchen give it a homey, cozy feeling and celebrate Midwestern farming communities. Everyone on staff was friendly and helpful, and if I ever get the chance to visit Ellinwood again, I will definitely be booking another room. P.S. You should also book their tour of the historic jail in Lyons if you get the chance. The guide has enough entertaining stories about former inmates' escape attempts to...
