Just came back from camping with some friends. We were there June 5-7, 2017. We practically had the whole entire campground to ourselves. We had a blast of course. We caught lots of catfish, drank a lot of booze and ate. Lot of Smores:)
Aside from that. Here's what y'all should know about the place; (Some may be the same as the other reviews)
our camp host Lou & his cute dog, Muffy, was very nice and accommodating. He fetched us some firewood and ice a few times and visited us to ask if we need anything.
Lots of camp sites but very little shade. Like you, i read reviews too so I reserved 2 sites in loop 4. Honestly, the only reason I could think of why loop 4 is better than 1,2 & 3 is because it's far from the 5 freeway. When we arrived, the original site I reserved #68 & #69 had no shade at all. We asked Lou if we could move somewhere with some shade and he was very kind to move us anywhere we'd like. He even gave us some suggestions on where we might find some shade. He probably only allowed it because no one else was there.
bathrooms are near (center). It's pretty clean, well stocked with toilet paper and even provided with hand soap (not the best brands but hey, it's camping). No seat covers & No showers.
fire pit, picnic table available per site and a water spicket near by also. My friends and I washed ourselves in the water spicket area with our tea kettle after swimming at the lake. It was a fun experience and it got the job done. Lol.
the campground is about 2-3miles away from the lake. You have to pay $11 for a day pass. You can go in and out of the parking lot anytime but they close the lake by 8pm. My friends and I were going to walk to the lake but it was just too hot. At the entrance of the lake you can buy bait (worms were the only ones available.) Fishing License, they either ran out or they don't sell any at the park. Lots of picnic areas near the lake. Bbq grills too but no playground for kids. You have to walk down a bit of a ways to go to their small swimming area. No lifeguard present.
nearest town to replenish your booze is about 20 miles away, so I suggest you bring more, cuz we sure didn't bring enough! Ugh!
lastly, bring some bug repellant cuz there are lots of flies that'll flock all over you, especially during the day. Not much of a place for wild animal sightings. If you like to go for an early morning stroll though you'll see a ton of white tailed rabbits. I named them all...
Reserved for 2 nights online I made sure to look at any fire restrictions even tried calling with no answers. Got there set up no one at the "entrance" (where ever that is there is no greeting or gate) this old grumpy guy ( I felt like I was in the twigh-light zone) slowly approaches us after we set up our tent and got everything out setup begins to tell us "there is no propane cooking allowed whatsoever and if he sees us he will report us and there will be a $1000 fine" what? Not even an apology other than "they aren't going to refund you for your reservation"... . I asked the guy if there was a phone number he would call to report such things so as I could make an inquiry regarding propane restrictions without at least a notice of restrictions online. He started stumbling and bumbling about "there are 3 numbers the he has and he could get them to me when he had time" when he has time? After a few minutes he came back with a sheet of paper and threw it out from his golf cart on the ground! Wow... Who goes camping for multiple days without using some sort of propane or cooking device and how rude to toss the paper on the ground?
I realize the old guy just works there and that's his life but, why isn't there a restriction noted online and give warning to campers? People plan these stays and driving distances!
Anyway after the unpleasant experience we just decided to leave as our whole stay was based on cooking our food, besides that the site we had (loop 1 #6) was at an incline with no real flat area to set up our tent the restrooms were disgusting, everything was dry dusty and unattended.
Interesting to note while we were packing up to leave, the old guy comes back and turns our "reserved" sign around to show "available" wow... I feel like I got scammed out of $48 bucks and he's ready for the next suckers.
Needless to say never going back to...
Read moreWe came here in dusk seeing running around rabbits. After setting up the tent we had a really good dinner with our good friends with lot of booze and nice tequila in flickering fire and starry night. Faraway strings of beautiful yellow and red light flickering and moving on freeway 5. Sleeping with cricket singing and night cold weather is interesting and peaceful. In the morning we had breakfast with bees flying around our food and some birds with blue tail feathers. This camping have really good view surrounding with some not much tall trees, good well kept restrooms with sinks, toilet bowls (having bunches of toilet paper and running water). Close by around 15 minutes car driving or 30 minutes bike riding we have Buck Creek trailhead around 7.5 miles. This is not my trail recommendation. It’d better enjoying water activities in Pyramid Lake Recreation Area with $15 parking per vehicle. This recreation area has fishing, swimming, sky jetting, boating… with dog friendly. Spending almost whole day at this beautiful area we came back our camping site to see most of our tents, canopies flying everywhere by strong wind (I don’t know by effect of Hilary Hurricane or by default of this location). Some one told us the wind will gone after sunset. However we decided to leave 1 day earlier than planed. I wish you all have a good time with beloved family and friends in this camp site....
