Great campsite. We were here 6 years ago and back this year (Aug 2018). We were thrilled that we were able to drive in and get the same site we had 6 years ago. As before we stayed longer than we had planned. It is a nice quiet spot. Very clean and not all spaces are reservable which is nice for a change. As it was 6 years ago; there were warnings communicated of bears or even cougars in the woods around the site. The host even loaned us his bear spray as we were at the back of the camp. As it was 6 years ago we heard or saw no animals except a lot of birds and chipmunks. The only disappointment was coming of the weekend when the circus showed up in the form of a large family from out of state who took over two sites who brought the dogs (howling puppy) and kids and cars and RVs and coolers and stoves and a Ferris wheel and heavy equipment and all of the contents of their house (or so it seamed) and we realized it was time to move on. Not the fault of the hosts at all but talk about killing the vibe. If you can, go during the week or in September as we did the last time when the kids are back in school. Great day area and hike to the near empty beach as well. Showers are nearby at the ATV camp. Caution: they are only open from 6-10 in the morning and again at night....
Read morePro: beautiful location, well kept campgrounds, excellent amenities Con: expensive per night, noise pollution, not a lot of privacy
Had a great time staying here with a friend, we stayed at site 31, which is a bit back from the loop. A lot of the sites here at Waxmertyle are exposed to the paved loop and don't offer much privacy, but the thick vegetation between sites help muffle noise.
Large, well lit and clean bathrooms, lots of access to potable water, and big fire pits. Our site had a bit of a red ant problem, but other than that we really enjoyed our stay. The wildlife volunteer host across the way from us was very kind.
My only issue was the noise pollution from the many vehicles out on the dunes. We could hear every rev quite clearly until well into the early morning. Once that died down, the sound of the ocean carried all the way to our site.
Hiking around here is great! I highly recommend the Waxmertyle Trail, which starts inside the camp itself. The beach and dunes are just a short walk away, but PLEASE RESPECT THE SNOWY PLOVER...
Read moreThe campgrounds are great in general, however I will make mention of its pros and cons.
PROS: Awesome for those with small to medium size camptrailers. Some toilet facilities are provided. Perfect for those that love to hike, as trail is roughly 3 miles to the beach. Campsites are large enough for those that prefer tents. Trash and recycling bins are provided throughout the campgrounds. Beautiful scenery for those that love nature and small chipmunks. Great for those that love kayaking close to shore. Roughly 6 1/2 miles to Florence for everyday needs.
CONS: Not friendly to those with very large camptrailers, even 40 footers, as campgrounds are more to the smaller side. No sewage dumping station or water station, unfortunately. Wifi is next to non-existent, good luck getting a signal. No electrical box attachments for camptrailers, rely only on generators or solar panels. Some Campsite Parking spots need repairs.
By all accounts, a fairly typical campground that is decent in more...
