ConsistencyâŠ..the GU has not mastered this yet. As a repeat customer something is always wrong. We stay at the GU 1 or 2 times a year for about 4-5 days.
Breakfast is muffins and coffee. When there isnât anything else open for breakfast in town you should offer breakfast to your guests. Especially when there are only a handful of guests staying.
Our meal Wednesday night was ok, what saved it was the A+ service. It almost always seems that one meal is subpar while another is good. Most times we let them know, this time we didnât. There was only 1 other tableâŠ.the food should be perfect. I wasnât going to complain. But when you pay $30-50 a plate the meals should always be A+ as no matter how many people are seated. I will mention that itâs nice that they now have liquor.
I understand itâs an old hotel. The room was well appointed and clean. The shower was like standing under a kitchen faucet. There wasnât any pressure. Lotâs of noises and konks when the heat turned on and pipes gurgling. One day the building (lobby & hallway) smelled of sewage. It was pretty horrible.
Still no daily housekeeping in the hotel. We have to ask for more towels & toiletries (no biggie). It would be nice to have the room fluffed up just once when staying 4 days especially when the front desk gal says âoh yeah, I need to look at that better and have more towels for people staying a few nights. Iâm just used to people staying one nightâ. And as per the owners response below weâve never seen a sign or been told about the option of housekeeping available. I mention it every time we come, that I wish there was housekeeping. So disappointing the lack of communication.
Weâve stayed here when it was under the old owners. Our first couple times with the new owners werenât any different but we wanted to give them a chance. It seems like they are trying/wanting to make the hotel into something Ft. Benton and the owners arenât ready for just yet. They need to offer A+ service consistently before expanding or adding anything more. Like the casino they also added (that we did not partake in). The owner below mentions they havenât made any changes, only a friendlier menu (which I enjoyed Chef Joshs foods when he was on his own alot more vs now at the GU). Maybe thats the problemâŠ. They need to make some changes. Itâs been a couple years now. Things arenât different at the GU. Itâs just another pretty historic hotel. Honestly, we wonât continue to give them a try, weâve given you about 3-4 tries. We will stay at an air...
Read moreWhat a gem of a hotel! The location is historic, charming, with a great view of the river. Karen at the front desk is incredibly welcoming and helpful. The rooms are cozy and inviting. This hotel is the epitome of old world charm down to the grand staircase, wood paneling and creaking floors! The restaurant and its new chef are 5 star quality! Service was awesome: friendly and very attentive! Chef brought our food to our table himself and explained everything. Really tasty French onion soup, a cleverly reimagined Cesar salad, amazing plump mussels in the most fabulous white wine sauce; a rich buttered halibut, and really moist chicken breast in a creamy mustard sauce, with a side of the most wonderful broccolini in gochujang sauce, and truffles fries! No room for dessert because everything was just so tasty and filling! Also met a very friendly and giggly little girl ghost who was running up and down the hallways outside my room (203)! Heard some music throughout the night (not loud enough so I could identify the songs) and there was definitely some activity going on in room 202 which abuts my room. Things also got moved around my room as one or two things went missing (like my driver license) only to show up where I had already looked! It was such a fantastic experience and I would go back there in a heart beat! Thank you for sponsoring the Piatigorsky Foundation! We canât...
Read moreVery very difficult for me to give anything but 5 stars because I so love and enjoy the Grand Union in Fort Benton. The rooms are always so clean and such a wonderful treat. But someone really needs to update your site and FB page because though the layouts are the same the furniture is different đ
For the first time the restaurant was really off. As usual the drinks were amazing and like all of the staff our waitress was fantastic. The Halibut and it's trimmings were also spot on and a true culinary treat. For myself I decided to try the top end on the steak list and went for the New York Strip. It comes with the House mashed potatoes which are also on the list for the sides. The steak was cooked as ordered but really needed a sear on the outside. It was also barely edible. Flavor was really off and it was beyond tough. My dinner guests noticed right away that I was even having trouble cutting it. I will admit that I should have just refused it. Maybe given staff and the chef the opportunity to make it right. But one of my guests is good friends with the owners and I didn't wish to embarrass her. Afterwards we decided that some feedback was relevant. This is only the second time that I've ever met a New York Strip like this, and the other was just as equally bad. No one cared for the potatoes either. One dish was outstanding and truly amazing and the other was horrific....
