The 'farmhouse' is located about 2.5 miles from Mendocino in a dense redwood forest. So it's a peaceful place to stay and there are facilities for relaxing in the garden in summer. It's an attractive house, well furnished in country-living style, comfortable and warm - thankfully, as the weather was very cold when the sun had gone down. Our bedroom (Elizabeth on the ground floor) had a king-sized bed, comfortable if slightly bouncy, a settee and a good bathroom with tub and shower. There is a large living room for guests, with big, comfortable settees and a gas-log fire.||||Breakfast is a one-plate affair rather than the more traditional selection of cereals / eggs / breads and preserves. We had some fruit salad with omelette and toast one day; pancakes with two strips of bacon the second; and warm cereals with prune and pear with a fresh muffin the third. Quality was very good; quantities are rather precisely judged to avoid waste.||||We are unfamiliar with American B&B standards and unsure of what to expect by way of servicing, but we were rather surprised that our bedroom was not serviced on the first morning. On the second day the bed was only roughly made and the coffee things washed, but no cleaning and bins...
Read moreI've stayed at the Mendocino Farmhouse twice now. Being from the Bay Area, I can conveniently travel there often enough and this is one of my top choices to stay. It's a deal for the area. The Farmhouse grounds are beautiful. Surrounded by redwoods and gardens, the farmhouse also hosts a chicken coop and a pond full of squeaking frogs. If you have the chance to stay in the barn (cedar or pine rooms), it is well worth the extra $20 or so a night. ||||The location is a few minutes drive off the main highway, tucked away on a local street. It's a quick 5 minute drive when you want to visit the town center. It's also close to Catch A Canoe (and bike rental too) next to the Big River for any hiking, biking or kayaking you would want to do. ||||As to the people who say that the Hostess is a little surly, I say stop being so sensitive and maybe get some thicker skin. I've never been offended or put off by her demeanor, but I also have not been coddled my entire life. If anything she can be little sarcastic and not saccharine sweet, but I definitely would not go out of my way to say she was rude. Maybe those people complaining were really obnoxious & needy, in which case, yeah, I would want them to get out...
Read moreMendocino has become a popular and pricey destination, and I found it unexpectedly hard to locate affordable lodgings. We were lucky and couldn't have been happier. The Farmhouse is delightful, beautiful, and charming, surrounded by gardens and mixed redwood forest, only a couple of miles from town center. We stayed in the Cedar room, a large room with a sitting area and fireplace, half of a separate cottage, only a few steps from the main house. The room was a little hard to find when we arrived in the dark on our first of two nights, but comfortable and blissfully quiet. Breakfasts were delicious, and Margie was accommodating when I asked for an egg in addition to the blueberry pancakes and bacon. Another morning we had scrumptious poached fruits & cooked cereal grains with blueberry muffins. Margie and the engaging young woman helping her offered custom advice on walks to take, and we appreciated the personal interest they took in us. A town resident, after asking where we were staying, called it the "banana belt" of Mendocino. Exceptionally...
