I chose Little River Campground for a quick 2 night stay near DeSoto and Little River Canyon. Booking with them was much easier last-minute than trying to book with DeSoto State Park. The campground manager was very prompt and helpful with my reservation and kindly suggested a site near the entrance. It was a great size for my camper, partially shaded (which was perfect), and had plenty of space. I was very pleased with the actual campsite. The facilities were also nice, and the distance to Little River Canyon was very close.
That said, as a solo female camper, I did not always feel comfortable. This campground has recently been purchased by a new owner, and while improvements are being made, there are still concerns. It appears that some individuals live here full-time, and there aren’t many regulations regarding appearances. Most long-term residents kept to themselves, but one was overly persistent in conversation, asking questions that made me feel uneasy even after I gave hints that I wanted to be left alone. While there were no direct threats, the atmosphere left my safety feeling questionable. I would not have felt comfortable there with my children.
If you’re looking for a long-term spot, this may be a fine choice. But if you’re traveling through, vacationing, or especially if you’re a solo female camper, you may feel more at ease at DeSoto or another state park.
From a business perspective, it feels as though the new owner is trying to weave together two different models—long-term residency and short-term vacation camping. Perhaps he is transitioning, or perhaps trying to merge both. I'm sure this will only improve over time as it appears the new owner and management are attempting to turn this campground into a...
Read moreLooked like a nice campground (I'm so tired of RV parks alongside the interstates as we're traveling last leg of x-country trip). I miss "campgrounds" and this place hit the spot perfectly for us. There was a picnic table and campfire pit.. I say "looked" because we only stayed for the night while traveling through. We stayed on site#1. Very easy pull through. Good water, sewer. The electric 50/30/20 gave us trouble on 50amp. We dogboned down to the 30 and were happy. Free WiFi was awesome. We called to reserve and spoke with the nicest person. Thank you so very much Mrs. nicest person. Now the hook. Thank goodness we had site#1. We're a 40ft 5er and getting to the campground turning off RT 35 (tight turn with ditches on both sides) you're faced with a tight narrow road with a 6-9% grade or more for the short 1/4 mile last leg to the entrance and that's that. Get here before dark. Any shorter camper should breeze right in.. pulling out in the morning I just reversed out of the spot rather than pull through and venture anywhere farther into the campground because I didn't scope out how to maneuver and didn't want to get stuck. So there's so much space right now at the entrance I was able to back out and U-turn to depart. We didn't even look at a campground map.. everything was nice and easy - getting there by 5(before dark), getting out by 8-ish... Hopefully we can come back and stay for much longer. Fort Payne is a beautiful town and so much to visit and tour. Alabama fan club museum. OMG,...
Read moreThe first night was great, we got to listen to the frogs by the pond and the ducks splashing around. The second night, well... we ended up packing up our belongings and leaving after midnight. Campground rules are easy to follow, quiet time, according to their rules, was suppose to be 10pm. The quiet time curfew comes and goes as the neighboring tent is blasting their music and sharing explicit sex stories. Neither of which I would normally have a problem with but when it's past the designated quiet time and you're lying in tent beside your daughter listening to reggae music and load moaning, it becomes uncomfortable. We did as we were instructed to do by campground management, we contacted their office. We were assured everything would be taken care of. Campground "security" drove through in a diesel truck to assess any noise disturbances. After another 20 minutes of the bs we contacted the campground manager again, at this time we were told that they drove through and didn't hear anything and they went out on their porch and didn't hear anything. So... I, as politely as I could, being heated by both the drunks in the neighboring tent and lack of management and security at the campground, told them to turn their music down and stop with all the noise. After that, we decided it was best to pack our things and leave. I would not recommend this campground to anyone looking for a nice family...
