Tremendous display of "Badland" topography. The 9 mile gravel access road starts out very washboarded for the 1st mile, then smooths out to an acceptable level. There are 3 main overlooks, picnic areas and restrooms along the access road, as it follows the canyon rim to the Angel Peak overlook. The views of isolated desert scenery are 360 degrees, although the main canyon is to the north. There are some hiking opportunities, although we didn't have time for that during our visit. The campground at the end of the access road consists of primitive tent sites with picnic tables and fire rings. There is a set of pit toilets near the campsites. A quick visit to the Angel Peak overlook from Hwy 550 could be done in as little as 45 minutes, although the scenery easily warrants more time. Hikes off the rim or further excursions along the many desert roads should only be attempted by experienced hikers/climbers or overlanders, with proper equipment, maps and supplies, as the area's terrain and weather can be very...

This was a wonderful option for dispersed camping along my journey through the high desert region. I felt like I'd discovered a rare gem full of gorgeous scenery and serenity. The nine sites on the loop offered a variety of settings, and I got there early enough to have a good choice. There are wonderful little rock-lined trails that take you to the best overlooks of Angel Peak. There are vault toilets, though I don't recommend camping near one as the odor is noticeable during the night. Also, you may want to choose a spot not so close to adjoining ones as I made the mistake of being near others, and they partied and played music late into the night, making it difficult to sleep. You'll need to pack out your trash as there are no dumpsters on site. It's a 6-mile drive back from the main road, and at times it's very rough, but it's doable in any car in my opinion. Overall, this is a place well worth the visit,...

Watch out for snakes! It was a great place to spend the night if you like the desert. I drove in at about 1 a.m. and on the dirt road up there passed what looked like a pink rattle snake. Since it was so late and we saw the snake we opted to just sleep in the car. When we awoke the next morning we were shocked to see the amazing view that we had missed by arriving in the dark. Wow! It was kind of like a little Grand Canyon! But there were natural gas wells everywhere. It was weird. I don't think the campground cost anything. They had pit toilets. I do not know if it had running water. Watch out for snakes! Apparently they...

The road out to the campground is a pretty good gravel and dirt road. You pass a couple of very scenic picnic areas, which are worth stopping at for the view. The campground is a large loop, so only a few of the sites are canyonside. Some shade and wind protection from scattered trees, but still relatively exposed to sun and wind. On the way in, you pass a "Land Farm" with lots of heavy trucks. What is a "Land Farm"?
