I am very disappointed with the manner in which camp was run this year (2017). My kids attended during the last week of camp, but absolutely did not receive the same experience as kids probably did during the first weeks of camp. I would only give one star, but the kids still managed to have fun, so I post two.
First, one of my sons was put at risk when his photography class was canceled and he was told by the staff member he had "free time." This was on the first day of camp, there were no suggestions made as to which other class he could attend, and he was left to wander camp on his own. He was left alone, unsupervised, and without direction. This is a very serious safety violation and my son could have been injured at best or disappeared at worse. Kids go missing from Boy Scout Camp every year, and now I understand why.
Second, I was given a menu plan from our leader to review and approve as my kids have serious food allergies. According to my husband (who was in attendance the first two days), nothing from the menu is being served. He claims that it appears the kitchen staff is trying to get rid of food left over since it's the last week of the season. He also told me the meals are very sparse and the kids are actually stealing food from each other to get enough to eat.
Having worked 5 summers at residents camps, I understand how the basic camp structure works. But endangering the kids at camp by allowing them to wander through camp without even a buddy and serving food that was not approved through the director screams child endangerment to me.
My kids will likely not be returning to any Boy Scout Camp, and I will warn parents about the Bear Lake Aquatics Base Camp. I feel slighted and frankly, a little ripped off since I paid the same amount of money as parents have all season just so my kids could have a...
Read moreThis was my second BSA camp. Overall, I liked the location though there is little shade. Would I come back? Probably not. They offered many great merit badges but the instruction was 3 hours long killing most excitement for the boys. Finally after much instructions the boys were able to do something. In short, here are the biggest concerns.
No organization or leadership. They ran out of materials needed for classes our boys were in. They also let other scout groups come in and register the same day thus over crowding the classes and giving less time for those who registered earlier in the year. Camp had little nutritional value and low quality. Boys this age need close to 3000 calories with all the exercise they are doing all day long. Meals were barely 600 for each meal. My suggestion would be to do yourself a favor and do NOT do the meal plan. For what you pay, it averages out to $6/meal. You probably get $2 worth. Sanitary Issues. There was poop in the showers for over several days. They never required to wash hands before eating and the bathrooms are not sanitary and the smell is suffocating.
There were some highlights but unfortunately these issues...
Read morePro: Nice secluded beach that is deep enough our boat could get close and swap passengers. Even on a weekend there was tons of space at the beach. Not the most sandy beach but enough to make my kids happy. They also enjoyed playing with all the cool rocks on the beach. Oh and you can fit a ton of tents (5) in one spot so the price is not bad if you split it. Also the camp host is very sweet and kind. Cons: The bathrooms are very stinky, clean but stinky. Also the camp host goes to bed early and some people take advantage of that and don’t follow the noise restrictions. One night we were up until 3am thanks to a noisy neighbor. Overall though we had an enjoyable time and plan on coming back. Not having a packed beach at Bear Lake is...
