Fun place to take families! The hike in is pretty steep, but it is so short that youngsters can certainly make it. The hut is new and has few typical hut trip annoyances, like having to go outside for a late-night call of nature. Hiking and skiing abound. There was plenty of snow nearby in early August for a snowball fight. Bring hut shoes or flip flops, as the floor gave us a few little splinters. Lots of day trippers. They have a separate rest/bathroom area. We had to lock the door all the time because people just wandered in the overnight side. Easy access to nearby 2nd Creek but no fishing.
The hut was very clean, and the caretaker visited while we were there to restock and make sure all was well. Propane stoves, heating (pellet stove, so not quite as quaint as the firewood just), lights, and cistern pump all operated flawlessly. The composting toilets are a little breezy, but that downdraft is the key to oderless operation, so it is a small sacrifice. Built less than a decade ago, this hut really...
Read moreJust went 4/18/16. We rented snow shoes, and a couple of us brought snowboards up too. There was a huge storm the last couple days, and there was SO MUCH SNOW. Had to be careful for tree wells and soft spots. This was the highest, hardest but most fulfilling and beautiful hikes I've ever done. I had to go a little slower, because of the altitude, but it is worth every breath and drop of sweat. It is gorgeous at the top. The Broome Hut is not what I would call a hut either. It's more like a luxury bunk house, which you can reserve ahead of time for overnight stays. It has a clean indoor type outhouse too. I would love to go back in the summer and hike up. If you ski, snowboard or just love hiking, this is your spot! Nearly 12,000 feet at the hut. Not for those with...
Read moreVery environmentally friendly hut with a composting indoor toilet and pellet stove. However, the combination of the day use area, a lot of people out for the day, and lack of normal hut amenities make this a mediocre hut. No grate for snowy feet, no good seating around the fire, no way to melt snow efficiently, no way to humidify stiflingly dry air, and a hut master up with his buddies until 1am all make this a sub par hut compared to 10th Mountain Division huts. Don't get me wrong, the area is amazing for backcountry skiing, but all the little things add up to an outdoor experience akin to a resort rather than a...
